    Sticky
UPDATE 2.1: This update adds the edited mesh for the Nightingale rock entrance door, which was overlooked before due to the fact it's part of the clutter meshes. This is part of the base meshes in the FOMOD installer.

UPDATE 2.0.1: This merely corrects the version number inside the FOMOD installer. Sorry for forgetting to do that with the prior update.

UPDATE 3/18/16:This update is two fold. First, I added a fix for the meshes in the previous update, the Mindflux ENB patch. There was a problem with the one mesh corrupting when it was saved. I also updated this mesh in the main mesh file, so this update applies to all users. Thanks to Burpy for bringing this to my attention, and generously providing screenshots for the next part of the update.

Second, I've added a new set of textures for ONE MOUNTAIN. These are a combination of my work, and 32cm's lovely Tamriel Reloaded mountain textures. Therefore, I'm calling them ONE MOUNTAIN RELOADED I was always a fan of all the tiny details he worked into his textures, but I wanted to bring a more rugged and craggy feel to them. My aim was to impart the weathering of centuries of freezing and thawing in Skyrim. The textures are available in 2k and 4K sizes (for the main mountain textures). The matching LOD textures and the 7000 steps textures are as included.

UPDATE 03-14-16: Version 1.9 is a minor update that adds an edited mesh for the ENB particle patch. All the other meshes remain unchanged. Only need to update if you're using Mindflux's ENB Particle Patch mod.

UPDATE 11-9-14: Version 1.8 gathers all the prior updates into one easy FOMOD installer. All the meshes you need are contained here. You will still need to install the textures separately. It seemed best to keep the two parts independent, because many people are using other mountain textures, and it keeps the file size much more manageable.

UPDATE 11-7-14: Version 1.7 fixes 3 more meshes. These had duplicate entries (NifSkope error). The duplicated entires bloated the file size of the meshes, and had duplicate references to the textures. Thanks to Burpy for finding these errors.

UPDATE 11-7-14: Version 1.6.1 corrects one mesh in the basic required pack. The prior mesh had apparently been a parallax mesh originally, so it could cause the texture to shift in the game. The correct Better UV Tweak mesh is now in its place.

Update 11-6-14 - Added matching textures for the 7000 Steps to High Hrothgar.

I never understood why the step textures looked nothing like the original mountain textures. To me, it seemed obvious that the steps would not have been made out of imported stone, but carved out of the mountain itself. So, I made the 7000 steps match the mountain textures so they bend naturally with their surroundings.

UPDATE 10-26-14: Added a patch for the Vivid landscapes Moss Rocks patch. A patch of a patch, it you will.

UPDATE 10-23-14: Version 1.6 adds three meshes that were overlooked previously. Two mill rocks meshes in Markarth, and one mountain mesh in Sovengarde. Hopefully, that's everything now.

UPDATE 10-21-14: Vivid Landscapes Patch was updated to add one missing rock mesh, and correct one rock mesh that still had a mountainslab01 reference. All users of that mod should download the 1.1 patch.

UPDATE 10-20-14: The USKP Patch is no longer needed. I've added all the USKP mesh edits to the main file, so a patch is no longer needed. This should make installation easier for people.

Sorry about version 1.4. I mistakenly included some meshes that I shouldn't have. Version 1.5 corrects the issue. All the proper edits for USKP, Better UV Tweak, and No Stretching are now combined properly.

UPDATE 10-19-14: I received permission from bwhy12 to incorporate the Better UV Tweak meshes into the main file.

There is no longer a need for a patch. The basic required meshes now have both langely02's No Stretching mountain/rock meshes, as well as bhwy12's Better UV Tweak mountain/rock meshes. This should simplify things a little, and make for a better appearance at the start.

Here's a useful reference that keithinhanoi came up with for a suggested patch order (updated):

    1. ONE MOUNTAIN - includes USKP, BUV, & NS fixes
    2. SMIM - includes USKP fixes and supersedes BUV
    3. Project Parallax - includes USKP fixes
    4. Vivid Landscapes - includes USKP & BUV fixes, and improved SMIM meshes
    5. ELFX Exteriors - includes USKP fixes
    6. Tamriel Reloaded - includes USKP fixes
    7. ENB Particle Patch
    8. EWP - includes ENB Particle Patch fixes, and improved SMIM meshes
    9. Realistic Water Two - includes ENB Particle Patch fixes, and improved SMIM meshes
    10. WATER / WATER Extra Wet - includes USKP fixes, and improved SMIM meshes
    11. Animated Clutter - includes USKP fixes
    12. Moss Rocks / Moss Rocks SMIM - no overwriting files

The only major potential conflict with this order is between Vivid Landscapes and WATER, and the choice for the user is between seeing the parallax effects from Vivid Landscapes or enhanced wetness effects from WATER.

If you don't use some of the mods, just skip the respective patches in the above list.

I apologize for the corny Lord of the Rings reference in the mod title, but I felt it was appropriate.

I hope people find this mod useful. My aim was to improve the appearance of the mountains while allowing for the use of larger textures without hurting performance. Since mountains are some of the biggest objects in the game, they do benefit from a larger texture size.

If anyone has issues with the mod, please let me know. And if you know of any mods that also need patches to be compatible, post them here.

    Cheers,
    Gamwich

UPDATE: Please download the version 1.1 required meshes, as I found that the blackreach meshes weren't in the proper folder. They were in clutter (as they should be), but there was no folder named blackreach inside.

UPDATE 2: Sorry everyone, but the Blackreach meshes needed replacing. Not sure what happened, but the last version didn't have the needed changes. They are now fixed.

I didnt find much performance boost with this mod maybe 5 frames per second but the biggest(and most important to me)change i got is in stability.

i have no idea if i shlould help with it but i never get CDTs anymore when im in the Reach and other places where mountains are very much present so ty for the work u done u made my Skyrim experience much better

So sad they changed stuff for SSE...I can't stand ANY of the mountain texture replacers in SSE, nor can I tolerate vanilla. I was hoping but it seems this one won't work :(

Hi, thank you for the wonderful mod. Does anyone know if I need to put a WATER patch if I use the "WATER - Water and Terrain Enhancement Redux" version?

hey... so one day i decided to install all your texture mods, including the one mountain to rule them all, i just want to say thank you very much because all your texture are performance friendly and they all look great! I could finally play skyrim in stable 30fps, you are a texture master...

Hello! Just a quick question, do you think this is compatible with mods that overhaul cities (such as Dawn of Skyrim)? I'm most concerned about Markarth.

There is certainly potential for conflict. I haven't used that particular mod, so I can't say for sure.

    Re:
So, what I set out to do was to remove all the mountainslab01 references from the game meshes. What was 01, would now be 02. This required a lot of editing ...

Wouldn't it be simpler to just overwrite the one texture with the other instead of changing all the references?

Simpler, yes...... But it wouldn't reduce the VRAM load at all, which is the main point of this mod.

Ah, okay. I thought the point was getting rid of texture mismatches/seams. I'm a big fan of reducing VRAM load, though! I mostly play a 1K game, aside from choice NPCs, whom I limit to 2K. Neither my system nor my eyes are good enough for higher.

The mesh seaming is pretty bad, so only using a single texture helps, but it's hardly a cure all. The VRAM savings allow you to use a larger mountain/rock texture without hurting your performance. After all, mountains are the biggest objects in the game. It makes sense to use a larger texture where it's most needed.

@Darklocq - I don't allow people to host my textures on other sites, so I will remove your post. You must have permission from mod authors to alter their work or repost it. I never allow my work to be hosted outside of Nexus.

Ah, hadn't thought of that, sorry. The point was to give you these packages for the files area if you want them. Should have used a PM for that. Wasn't intended for permanent hosting.

I personally don't need help in making reduced file sizes of textures... Making textures is what I do after all. Besides, there's no real reason for making them that small. It's only one texture set, and they are the largest object in game. You can same VRAM other places on smaller in game objects.

Well, of course you don't need help compressing a texture. I seem to just be having difficulty communicating here. It's not that you couldn't, it's that you didn't. That is, you supplied a low-res add-on (for the Steps) without a low-res main package. I just put together one for my own game and passed it up to you (both straight 1K and 1k-512). The only point was that an option is missing from the Files page.

ANYWAY, looks great (even at 1K-512!), so thanks for the idea and its implementation.

If I thought it was necessary, I would've done it, it's as simple as that. Making the largest object in the game 1K or 512 is totally unnecessary. It's one texture set that is constantly loaded in the game when outdoors. The loss of visual detail at that size is considerable.

My whole intention was to create a way to improve performance without making the visuals worse. You seem to have trouble grasping that concept for some reason. The size of the object should determine the resolution of the texture used. The largest object should therefore have the largest texture.... and that's the mountains.

I guess I don't spend enough time in up-close mountain staring. :-) I have enough encounter mods that most of my outdoor time is combat. And my eyesight's crap anyway.

Purple means you have textures that aren't loading in the game. You may have a conflict with another mod.

I am having some problems with this mod. Distant mountains in the reach have default textures.
Using mod organizer, i installed the All in one FoMof installer with the relevant patches, together with the 2k regular pack.
I ran texgen as usual, and then i ran DynDoLod. The end results being awesome looking mountains all around, excepting the reach.
Here is an example of distant mountains in the reach being noticeably brighter: https://imgur.com/a/Q4ZCCMm
Any idea what i messed up?
