About this mod

Equipping a torch scares off certain predators.

Description
Equipping a torch protects you from certain beasts. They won't attack you on sight anymore, but they'll stalk you until your torch runs out, or they find an easier target. Getting too close with your torch will cause them to flee. See the screenshots for a visual representation. New features in Dynamic Mode allow beasts to advance slowly on you and attack during the day. During the night and in dark environments, beasts become more cautious of your torch and flee as you get close.

The effected creatures are:
  • Wolves
  • Bears
  • Sabre Cats
  • Skeevers
  • Small Frostbite Spiders
  • Ice Wraiths
  • Trolls

Here are some videos which explain the mod and show you the effects:

After installing version 1.1 or higher, your player will automatically be given the ability Primal Fear. You'll see a notification in the top left saying "You are empowered with Primal Fear". If you wish to toggle the spell on yourself or another NPC, you can use one of the two spells I've made. They are added through the console so you don't have to clutter up your spell tabs. Flames of Primal Fear is used to toggle the effects for yourself. Fireball of Primal Fear is used to toggle the effects on NPCs. It can be cast on all playable races, and should support followers made from a custom race. Using the fireball on your followers and giving them a torch will allow them to scare off beasts at night.

Getting The Spells (not required)
The spells are only required if you want to toggle off the effects for yourself, or if you want to add the ability to your follower. Open the console with ~ and type help "of Primal Fear" (the quotation marks are necessary). You should see the IDs for the two spells. Type into the console player.addspell along with the spells ID and press enter. A notification will pop up in the top-left letting you know that the spell was added.

The spells are found in the Illusion Tab, and are cast like any other spell. Additionally, you'll see notifications in the top-left telling you if you enabled or disabled the ability.

Installation
Install with NMM. Only use one of the 1.5 files, either Dynamic or Default.
Or
Download manually, unzip the contents, open the primal fear folder and copy-paste the data folder into your skyrim directory. Yes to all merges.

Uninstallation
Uninstall with NMM
Or
Deleting PrimalFear.esp in your Data folder will stop most of the scripts and remove the spells and abilities.

There is one script left on your save file after uninstalling. It does absolutely nothing in-game but it does add about 0.06 kb of data onto your save file. If you want to remove this use Save game script cleaner. This tool is also great for removing scripts left by other mods you've uninstalled. It greatly improved stability for me.

Recommended Mods
This mod is based off of the fire cloak spell. Because of this, NPCs will comment very frequently about you using spells. To stop them from making these comments, install this mod:

Dangerous Spell Comments Removed - by Matthiaswagg

There is a Brawl Bug where your opponent will think you are casting a spell and begin to fight you to the death. To remove this bug use this mod:

Brawl Bugs Patch - by jonwd7

I'd also recommend making animals, especially wolves, harder to encourage you to make use of this new ability. Here are a couple mods which you can try:

Dangerous Wolves - by jimmybob
Lore-mongering Beasts - by Rennn

Compatibility
This mod doesn't change animals at all, it just adds cloak spells to the player which have effects on certain creatures. Because of this, it will never break your game if you're using it with creature mods. But, to have the fear work correctly on a creature, it has to have a defined race (eg. WolfRace). Most mod authors already do this, so you shouldn't have to worry about compatibility.

Here are some mods which I've checked to be compatible:

More will be added as I check them.
