About this mod

Start the game without being a prisoner at Helgen; choose your starting equipment and location and, possibly, pursue the main quest without reference to your ever having been imprisoned.

DESCRIPTION:

The player arrives in Skyrim via boat instead of starting the game at his or her execution in Helgen. You can choose from a variety of starting options which will affect what equipment you start with (choosing a wealthier background will give you better starting equipment and therefore make the start of the game easier; to start with no equipment or spells, choose the “beggar” option), and then choose a city in which to dock -- Riften, Windhelm, Dawnstar, or Solitude. You can also choose to start the game as a vampire.

To start the main quest, you can either agree to send word to the Jarl of Whiterun for Alvor or Gerdur in Riverwood, witness Alduin flying away from Helgen and tell Balgruuf yourself, or pursue the civil war questline for either side, in which case, Balgruuf will force you to start the main quest at “Bleak Falls Barrow.”

References to the player having been a prisoner at Helgen have been removed or edited out of dialogue.

If you have the official Dawnguard expansion, you should also activate the included Dawnguard compatibility file. This fixes one line in Dawnguard that refers to the player having been at Helgen.

REQUIREMENTS:

A working copy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The Dawnguard compatibility file also requires the official expansion, Dawnguard.

INSTALLATION:

Place the contents of the .7z file in your "Data" folder, which is usually located under Steam/steamapps/common/Skyrim.

The ReadMe document and the .bsl file are not required for the mod to run – you may keep them or discard them.

UNINSTALLATION:

Make sure that you have started the main quest in some way, and preferably, have been inside Helgen Keep at least once, so that the collapsing ceiling is properly… collapsed.

Then you may delete the included .esp and .bsa file.

The nature of Skyrim’s scripting language, Papyrus, means that, even following this procedure, your Papyrus log will continue to throw errors about missing scripts, potentially leading to save game bloat. There is, lamentably, nothing that I can do about this – you have been warned.

UPDATING:

Replace all older files with newer versions. If in doubt, replace all mod files with the contents of the latest uploaded archive.

No in-game configuration is necessary.

BUGS:

As of yet, none.

If you use this mod with an existing saved game where the player has already done the default Helgen intro, then NPCs will stop mentioning that you were ever at Helgen. However, this will not affect the game in any way, except perhaps roleplaying-wise.

COMPATIBILITY:

This should be compatible with practically any mod that doesn’t alter Helgen and isn’t another alternative start mod. If you wish to use a mod that alters Helgen, such as Helgen Reborn, you should make sure that the main quest has started, that bandits have appeared in Helgen (wait four days after starting the main quest, enter Whiterun, and then travel to Helgen and see if the bandits are there), and it would also be prudent to enter Helgen Keep at least once, though this may not be necessary.
