NOTE TO ANYONE WHO HAS MY CONTENT IN THEIR MODS: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SELL MY WORK ON THE STEAM WORKSHOP. This is exactly the reason I originally said no to anyone wanting to use my content. And now here we are. Valve has turned into EA. Immediate action will be taken against anyone attempting to profit from my work, or original IP.
There is now a smaller flake version in the Optional Files category. I make all of the huge, closeup flakes very small. Please see small comp screenshots in images.
Version 1.1 is now up. It corrects the typo I made in naming the "effects" folder. I had accidentally typed "efects", so if you have 1.0, please grab the corrected version now up. And a big thank you to wolfiZ for catching my typo!
Up here in the north the snow actually looks like the vanilla snow. It clumps up and doesn't fall as perfect snowflakes so I wouldn't say this is immersive. Rather the opposite.
Let's see... cartoon snow: http://admission.blog.gustavus.edu/files/2010/11/snow-cartoon.jpg Real snowflakes: http://erinhasablog.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/snowflakes.jpg Some more real snowflakes: http://www.donkom.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/snowflake-heart.jpg And even more real snowflakes: http://images.cdn.fotopedia.com/flickr-5360064817-hd.jpg But what do I know? After all, I don't have a Japanimation avatar.
I had a character in Blackreach and saw some dust motes that looked like snow flakes. Do you know if those textures are also used for dust by Skyrim? Or it may be a mod like ELFX that added those in. Not sure.
Snow and dust are two different texture sets. Of course, this doesn't mean they don't get interchanged in some interiors. I've seen snow inside caves before, but it was a while back. No clue on ELFX. Haven't ever heard of it.
As for Blackreach, I've had strange things happen in there ever since I tested out the unofficial patch. Solid black rocks floating in the air, snow, Exterior LODs appearing in the air (like tree clusters and the like), Bright daylight instead of the proper dark, etc..
I've seen "solid black rocks" and other things floating in the air in Blackreach too but I think it's an engine bug because save/quit/load fixes the issue.
ELFX (Enhanced Lights and FX) makes a dramatic difference in lighting dynamics, but also adds effects like smoke to candles, extra smoke in taverns, more mist or dust in some locations, etc. So when I saw the snowflake shapes in Blackreach, I wasn't sure if that was in the base Skyrim game, or something ELFX added. If it's in base Skyrim, then it might explain why Bethesda made blobs for snowflake textures, since they also double as dust textures. I saw them again in one of the Dwemer Ruins that connects to Blackreach, so it's in more than one location for sure.
The floating black rocks in my Blackreach only go away when I remove the unofficial patch and start a new game. As for things appearing solid black, yeah that's just rendering bugs. I've gotten purple (usually right before a crash), black, white and multicolored. And yeah, those all go away with a restart.
I figured out the snow/dust issue. I noticed in the Dawnguard DLC that I was seeing a familiar snow texture as part of the dust inside a castle, so I went hunting... Turns out that fxsnowsub is indeed used as a dust particle effect as well as for snow. It's one of the textures I didn't alter, since it didn't look like a blurry round ball. I'm going to make an edited version of it tonight and test it out to see if I can get it a little less "snow inside" looking lol.
Very nice snowflake textures, Mr, Dave. I halved the resolution to get better performance on my setup, and they still look quite nice... especially when the flakes are close up. Endorsed.
Thank you, BD! I'm thinking of expanding this to include the super extreme closeup round blurry flakes, like what can be seen in the failed SR75 tow mission... that one where all the psychos keep claiming the dust and ice particles are UFOs lol. I had some awesome photos of a person's van that he wanted lightened up which had thousands of them in one image. Would add for a little more diversity and realism... but since it's a photographic effect, I've been hesitant.
Actually, where i live, the snow clumps before it reaches eye level, so it looks more akin to Beth's blurry snow.
That said, this looks, ahem .. cool.
What are the specs on the textures, relative to the vanilla ones? My rig is hitting RAM cap and getting CTDs here and there, so trying to keep her RAM usage down a bit (textures half go to system RAM, not VRAM, and ENBBoost actually even seems to CTD me >.< ), especially as Real Clouds is already on this baby.
They are larger than vanilla size. If you are pushing your system that hard, I'd recommend dropping the ENB. I've heard nothing but bad things about them and their demands. Vanilla was 128 for one and 256 for the other, this is 512 for both. I'm vehemently against all that "HD HQ suck up all your resources to a 2FPS crawl with just one texture" crap.
fxsnowsoftsub was the one that was originally 128. fxsnowtile was 256.
Thank you Mr. Dave for making the files sizes reasonable. My computer is a few years old and some of the textures out there are unnecessarily huge. Will update, the flakes look lovely and endorsed.
What about ENBoost? It is empty, just enables the memory usage expansions/enhancements. All I use is parallax and DOF settings, and i don't notice anything bad on my end. [the darn colorful textures i got are enough this time around. I'd rather have more things in my game instead of super pretty colors and effects. ]
emieri00 "All I use is parallax and DOF settings". You may want to look into what all it takes to use parallax. To give you an idea, it adds an average of 11 degrees C to your running temp.
I thought it was just some random skin-tight female clothing with weird glowing rings... But now that you guys mentioned... @_@ Anyway, i'm going to get this. Bet the snowflakes still look blurry thanks to enb dof... but yeah. xD
Alright, everyone is curious about the shady giraffe D: I specially like beast races, so having a new one in my collection would be great. I think it is a sort of armor, tho.
SkeFlyer, you can get the pig from "Summon Dragonborn Mounts and Followers" found here: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/32265//? It's an awesome mod! The blades and armor aren't finished for it yet, but as soon as they are, I'll be sending them to gg77 so they can be included.
OOPS..looks like your default folder path in the archive is "efects" instead of EFFECTS. If you don't catch that when installing, you won't see the new snow EFFECTS..
Thank you for catching my mistake so quickly, wolfiZ ! I always triple check everything. Must have just read right past the folder name over and over. A correct version is up now.

Here's what snow looks like to non-cyborgs:

Bad example. Too much light. Snow flakes in the mountains without city light sources do not look like this.

..........By the way now I remember why I always disabled comments.

Since most of the textures in my effects folder are Bethesda stock I'm all for some change. lol
I'll try to get some screenshots of your textures in game uploaded sometime today.
Discontinued is such an evil word.......it makes it sound like I got recalled. lol
I like to think of it as a nice long vacation.
