Skyrim SE version now available

Description

Provides a spell called "Mage's Focus", intended for mages - especially battlemages - which reduces spell cost and improves magicka regeneration. The spell scales as the player levels up, so learning the spell once suffices. The target audience for this is players who wish to be battlemages in unenchanted armor. But anyone can use it.

For a Destruction battlemage, I find it works well in combination with my mod Incremental Difficulty which keeps the players damage output at 100% at Master difficulty, rather than reducing the players damage output to 50% as vanilla does.

Where to Find the Spell
The spell tome can be found in a burnt corpse on the second floor of Bleak Falls Tower (the tower along the path from Riverwood to Bleak Falls Barrows).

Details
  • The spell has a 6 second cast time (so plan your battles!)
  • The duration of the spell is 10 minutes.
  • There is no warning/indicator when the spell runs out. (Nor will I make one, so don't ask!)
  • The spell is level-based, and guided by the same level scheme as the sale of the mages robes.

Original edition
  • Level 1-7: +50% magicka regen, -15% spell cost (all schools)
  • Level 8-15: +75% magicka regen, -20% spell cost (all schools)
  • Level 16-23: +100% magicka regen, -25% spell cost (all schools)
  • Level 24-31: +125% magicka regen, -30% spell cost (all schools)
  • Level 32+: +150% magicka regen, -40% spell cost (all schools)

Elite edition
  • Level 1-7: +75% magicka regen, -25% spell cost (all schools)
  • Level 8-15: +100% magicka regen, -40% spell cost (all schools)
  • Level 16-23: +125% magicka regen, -55% spell cost (all schools)
  • Level 24-31: +150% magicka regen, -65% spell cost (all schools)
  • Level 32+: +175% magicka regen, -75% spell cost (all schools)

NOTES:
1) As mentioned above, the spell scales with the player as they level up. No need to learn new versions as you advance.
2) The spell can be cast repeatedly even before the 10 minutes expires - it will not stack.

How do I know if its working?
1) While the Regen effect does show up in Active Effects, the spell cost reductions are perk-based, so they do not show up under Active Effects. Instead, before casting Mage's Focus, look at the magicka cost of one of your spells (preferably, one with a high magicka cost) in your Magic tab.
2) Cast Mage's Focus.
3) Check the magicka cost of the spell and it should be reduced by the percentage as stated in Details above. Also, look in your Active Effects, and you should see the "Regenerate Magicka" effect caused by Mage's Focus, with a time value indicating the number of minutes remaining on the spell.

Compatibility
This mod is standalone and does not replace any existing spells, perks or magic effects. Since it only uses the built-in methods (i.e., I used no scripts) of modifying regen and spell costs there should be no compatibility issues.

The only incompatibility I can foresee is if some mod modifies the Bleak Falls Tower location, causing the burnt corpse not to appear there. Even in that case, one could use the console to find the spell or spell tome (e.g.,"help focus"), and then then use "player.additem xxxxxxxx 1" to add the spell tome or "player.addspell xxxxxxxx" to add the spell directly.

Is This Overpowered?
The spell is intended to not be overpowered. The 10 minute duration keeps it from being a constant nuisance but also isn't a perma-buff. Likewise, the lack of indicator when wearing off is intended to keep one alert. The 6 second cast time also makes the buff require some strategic planning.

However, because it is intended to act as a kind of substitute for enchanted robes, if you use the two together it probably would be overpowered. Also, if you enchanted your gear to the hilt, then combining with this spell might be overpowered.
