The Dawnguard story (and Skyrim in general) is known to all, but there is another story hidden underneath. In this mod it's told through the Mystic Diaries, the magical books, which some mischievous Daedra Prince scattered all around the place for Dovahkiin to read.

The Mystic Diaries contain thoughts and memories of Serana, Valerica, Harkon and others. Some of them are new and some are ancient, and not all of them make sense right away: it's best to collect and re-read them later (they weigh nothing anyway). The story will come together only when Dawnguard DLC is complete.
There are 31 main volumes: you'll find them during Dawnguard's quests, right on the way. It doesn't matter which side you take, hunters or vampires, all books will still be available, sooner or later. Each holds a piece of the story, and, additionally, some of them teach various skills.
Also, there are 5 extra volumes scattered around Skyrim, and there are hints where to look for them. Oh, and don't bother searching Ancestor Glade and the vast spaces of the Forgotten Valley, there's nothing there.
Warning: some mods, which modify the vampires' appearance and Castle Volkihar, may interfere with this mod. It's best to play the game as it was originally designed, otherwise some important things will go unnoticed.
