"If possessed dolls are a common horror element in many children's horror stories, and an enemy in many abandoned mansions or necromancer hideouts, it is true however that there are many ways to animate them. From simple involuntary animations through what's known as Poltergeist, to conscious remote control by a wizard, or simple posession by a spirit, perhaps the most feared method for those who are used to dealing with this type of creatures of darkness, is the process of animation by the Flame of Pestilence. But where did this method originate? Well, just as the Flesh Atronachs of the Sheogorath's realm are distinguished by their specific methods of creation, different from those used in other realms, or even in Nirn, the specific constructs known as Ragdoll Golems had their origin in this realm of insanity too.

But it all starts with Nirn, and with links to another Daedric Prince, Peryite. On an undetermined date, in era unknown, a Breton jester who animated the court to which he belonged, and a whole legion of children around his city, found the love of his life, and with her he started a family. From this family would be born a small and sweet child, unfortunately, when he started to take his first steps, he was stricken with a strong plague along with his mother, who died. Broken by the loss of his beloved, and with his dying son in his arms, the jester begged to Peryite, the god of plagues and pestilences, a cure for his son's disease, and cried out, in his extreme despair, that he would change the souls of all the children who followed him and loved him, for the life of his dying son.

Deals often arise at moments of the most desperate and senseless clamor, and Peryite accepted the deal. In order for his son to stay alive, the Jester would have to hand over the souls of the children of the region, one by one, to the Daedric Prince.

Being a Jester loved by the kids, it was easy for him to approach them, and gain their trust, but still he was not a murderer, nor could he expose himself by killing them publicly and directly, so he turned to an old talent, building dolls and puppets. He then proceeded to build these dolls, and imbue their pins, buttons and other details with the most powerful poisons he could find. On dark nights, he would go out distributing these toys through the streets, doors of houses, and places where children played during the day. By touching them and playing with them, children ended up poisoning themselves and dying, and their souls were collected by Peryite's invisible envoys, in the form of Barghests, who carried their souls to Peryite's dungeons. Sometimes, in disguise, he would deliver the toys directly into the hands of the babies still in the lap of their own mothers, blinded by the despair of saving his only and beloved child, and forgetting any trace of compassion.

But even though his son was still alive, he had no improvement, and kept growing up while still lying on a bed, not knowing life, unable to walk, run, play, and over the years, the Jester asked Peryite about why his son didn't heal, since he was being so faithful to his deal with the Prince. The Plague Daedra then responded, throwing in the Jester's face the fact that the deal was for the children's souls in exchange for his son's survival, not the cure. The cunning Prince, of course, then offered the child's cure, but in exchange for the souls of far greater numbers than had ever been offered over the years by the desperate man.

Already frightened by the distrust of the region and the suspicion about a possible relationship between the dolls that mysteriously appeared and the high number of children deaths over the past few years, the Jester had little more to go on with his old deal, much less with the current one. It was then that Peryite offered him the possibility to manipulate and use the Flame of Pestilence, which radiates from the very Chaotic Creatia used in the realm of that Daedric Prince. Peryite instructed the Jester to make an enormous amount of dolls and puppets, and to curse them with the very Flame offered to him. He ordered the Jester to travel during the festive season to the various cities in the region, and to distribute them to large groups of needy children. The Flame embedded within the toys would spread a deadly plague that would decimate dozens of children in every town, thus fulfilling the new deal with Peryite. And so he did, and for the next months he lived secluded in his house, in a monotonous and repetitive task, which afflicted his mind and made him paranoid, demented. He was no longer a Jester, as he now identified himself simply as the Toy Maker.

And as promised he distributed the toys in nearby towns and spread a plague that killed more children than he had killed over the years. Upon arriving home, full of hope that perhaps he would already find his son cured, the Toy Maker found the child dead in the room where for years he had made the poisoned toys. Without understanding how his paralyzed son was able to walk out of his room to the atelier, he soon blamed the humble old lady who worked for him as a clueless caregiver, as the one who was responsible for carrying his son to the atelier and poisoning the kid by letting him touch the toys. Even though he considered that everything could have been an accident, paranoia soon took over, and he suspected that she knew about his crimes and had taken revenge, so, he killed her, ripping her throat out with one of the scissors he used to cut the fabric to make the ragdolls.

That's when Peryite spoke to the man, congratulating the now broken father on the success of their genocidal operation, and explaining that he fullfilled his part of his bargain with the former Jester: Peryite got the Toy Maker's son back on his feet, who, sparked by his youthful curiosity and beaming at being able to move at last, ran in search of the atelier where his father made the toys he always wanted to play with and never could, remembering the several times that his father carried him there, to keep him as company, and he watched the toys bein made, toys that he could only look at, immobile and frustrated, pretty much like the toys themselves. While playing, however, he contaminated himself with one of the dolls imbued with powerful poisons, and died.

The father could not believe it, he felt betrayed, cheated, but Peryite called the man ungrateful, and reiterated that their deal had been kept. But, in what the Deity claimed was an act of pity, he told the Toy Maker that he would agree to give his son a second chance, suggesting to the now-crazed father to build a new, bigger doll that Peryite would bind his son's soul on, like a Golem, so that he would stay alive with his father forever.

Furious, the Toy Maker refused, blasphemed Peryite and abandoned the cult to the God of Pestilence, who walked away uninterested, and satisfied with the legion of souls he had acquired through the reckless and desperate father over the years, leaving the former jester to his knees, in his lonely house, hugging the corpse of his frail son, now dead. The Toy Maker world collapsed, and for the next few years he lived in isolation, sunk in deep dementia and depression, not out of regret but out of revolt. His mind deteriorated, to the point where he became nothing more than what he had been doing for years, an obsessed and compulsive puppet creator, amassing hundreds of them scattered around his house, some even human-sized, that he pretended to be his son, this one who still lay on the ground as an yellowish skeleton, while his father compulsively sewed more and more dolls, uttering wishes for revenge against Peryite.

Shegorath, the Prince of Madness, always looking for new insane elements to decorate his Shivering Isles, took notice of this demented toy maker, and opened a portal in the basement of  the toy maker's house, inviting the man to enter his realm, more precisely in the area known as Dementia. To convince him, Sheogorath offered the jester the opportunity to get revenge on Peryite, not because the Madgod wanted to, or even thought it possible, but because chaos is the driving force behind this Daedra's actions. Attracted by the seductive idea, and blinded by the desire for revenge, he accepted, and a place known as the Hall of the Plagued was given to him as a residence.

Peryite is known for managing several lower planes of Oblivion, and for being a taskmaster for other Princes, balancing the wills of Princes or their direct subordinates from the high spheres of Oblivion with their lesser daedra vassals of lower power and/or intelligence serving the realms of such mighty entities, or even the ones living in smaller, or even pocket realms, thus creating a descending line of control and order over many lesser races of daedra. In relation to Sheogorath, it is known that Peryite controls a pocket realm within/or connected to Dementia, where human inhabitants of the Islands who die of plagues and diseases are sent and used for various purposes, and rescued back by Sheogorath when he needs, whether to reincarnate them again on the Islands, or for some other unknown purpose. The place that guards this portal is known as the Hall of the Plagued, and, aiming to amuse himself at the expense of the Toy Maker, megalomaniac to the point of thinking he could destroy a Prince, Sheogorath gave this place to him to control.

Upon arriving, and seeing that the Flame of Pestilence was present and strong in that place, and already knowing how to manipulate it, despite rudimentarily, he gained new breath and began his research. He stopped handing over to Peryite the souls of the plagued sent to the Hall, and began experimenting with them in the mansion given to him. The Toy Maker started creating freaks animated by that power, golems in the form of dolls and bizarre puppets now began to shape his ragdoll army, energized by the dying souls of humans killed by plagues on the Isles. Over time, he even managed to tame Peryite's daedric canine envoys who entered through the portal to find out why souls were no longer being sent to the pocket realm connected to the Hall, further increasing his pestilent army. Legends in the Islands say that his son's skeleton and soul were themselves inserted into the most terrible Ragdoll Golem of the mansion, causing the Toy Maker, in his madness, to succumb to the desperate temptation to bring his son back in the way that, ironically, Peryite originally offered to him.

Rarely seen in Nirn, some Demented Mages eventually summon Ragdoll Golems, which in combat can summon small armies of Possessed Puppets. Both are surrounded by the Flame of Pestilence, and can create attacks with it. In addition, the Ragdolls use poisoned pins studded in their arms that inflict a paralyzing poison on their enemies. By killing these mages it is possible to obtain those rare summon spells."
