About this image

...and I can hear it at once! What kind of theme is that!!!

So first, I do expect a bit of a fall back for this theme and by saying that, I sure hope there's an interest in showing me I'm wrong. This is the theme – so far – that relies heavily on technique more than anything. It really doesn't matter how fancy your game looks or whatever HD textures you're using. Colours are still around, but also of less importance. Infact, I would encourage you to try out making black&white shots, if that's something you haven't done before. Neither does the beauty of your character mean anything, in case that's important for you.

No, instead you're hereby left with only light and shadow, the shapes and contours and the need to work the angle to make it all work.

I took a writing class a few years back and we had this assignment in one of the tasks – we weren't allowed to use a specific letter in any words throughout a whole story. Sure, it was only a short novel for about 3-4 pages, but I can assure you that letter was truly missed once the writing started. In the end though, we all came through and that's pretty much my point with this theme – if you take away the things you normally look at, what will you see or create then?

Shadows and silhouettes can work as both illusions and actual things. My main idea was to have shadows involved in this theme in some way, but I didn't want it to be just dark gloomy shots. I needed something else, so the idea of making shapes out of shades or simply outlines of anything really, intrigued me to take this into the actual theme phase. I didn't have that many images myself that would suit a presentation, so I've been keeping on watch for such opportunities when I played the game...all the way back to when I used Rudy ENB without the LUT's. That's why my invitation set here includes a bit of both older setups and my newer style with the letterboxes.

Now I'm asking you to do the same, but within two weeks!

Secondly, this theme is also a dedication to one of the most inspiring screenarchers around here. I know him as Will, but some might see him as Klaxoid, and from what I've picked up, he has a certain love for silhouette shots. I might be wrong here, and if so, I'm sorry, but you get the dedication anyway!

I've done only one themed dedication earlier and that was Wildlife for Erwin. I have more coming along though – hopefully they don't say their farewells before I get to those themes, as was the case with Kayol - and that's why I want to say they are often dedications because I know the people behind are somewhat suitable for the theme. It's no extra favors or anything, so don't feel bad if I do this with an individual name on it. It's firstly just a match, but still a theme for everyone, no matter how well you know the person or not.

The fifteenth theme is...

”Silhouette”

...and it's now open for anyone willing to give this a try. It doesn't care how much skills you have as a screenarcher, if you play the game in Vanilla or with some nice ENB, if you're a newcomer to this community or one of the ”dragons”. All that matters is that you're giving yourself a challenge and that you perhaps feel inspired to try something else for a change. How you interpret the theme is entirely up to you...although I suspect our great storytellers here wants to rip my long hair off, because of this theme!

If you'd like to be part of this theme, simply upload a set and name it ”15th theme – Silhouette” and I'll do the rest to make a compilation set out of all the contributions. I'll be picking one or two images from each screenarcher, so it doesn't matter how many sets or uploads you do. The image count is still 1-2 in total.
The fifteenth theme will be closed at midnight, Sunday 27 January, CET.

My final words would be...don't let this theme scare you off, because I know from experience it's a really great way to discover Skyrim from a whole new angle. I'd also say, don't just place everything against a sunset and be done with it. Try something different. It's going to be hard if you want to make a lot of images, but the end result is almost always a real treat!

Good luck...and yes, sunset silhouettes are welcomed too! ;)

Happy to hear that! After one year running this event now, I find it's so cool people want to join in still after all this time. It encourages me to strive on with the idea. You're most welcome with a contribution and I'll make sure to include one or two picks of my choice from your set in the final community compilation that will be released a few days after deadline...

I like that village shot too, mostly because I've always loved landscape scenes of any kind even if I've got 300+ characters made for this game by now!

Have fun giving yourself a challenge and good luck!

Many thanks, Izzy! I wanted to do something that would be somewhat more technical this time, even if silhouettes are basic stuff. They can give you some really cool results too!

I've always like silhouettes myself, so this is a fun theme for me too...although I wish I had the time to include more new stuff, but it turned into a mix instead. To have 20 images ready for each theme release is starting to worry me a bit, I can't keep up with my playing!

      Oh yeah!

Of course it's okay! The whole idea is for you guys in the community to do something together while I gently guide you in a certain direction with my themes...

If this intrigues you, then make a contribution. You're more than welcome to join in!

      And thanks!

This sounds fun. I've got a question though -- this is the first time I've seen one of these -- how do I submit a photo?

Simply make a regular post as you would do normally - either it's one image, a few or a whole set of them - and name the upload "15 theme - Silhouette". That way I know it's a contribution and I will also be able to search for the title once I start making the compilation. I will decide which one (or two) images will be presented in the final collaboration set - which I will also put together - and then I upload the whole thing with links back to the original screenarchers who were involved a few days after deadline.

Glad to hear you find it interesting. I've been doing this for almost one year now and people still enjoy the event. It can also be a bit of a personal challenge for you if you're "stuck" on what to snap images of. This will help you spark some imagination again.

      Welcome onboard!

I had a feeling a few screenarchers here would like this theme and you're certainly one of them, Heike. You've done some fascinating silhouette shots in your earlier sets before, often with the help of strong contrast or heavy DOF effects, so this is something you can do expertly. To tell a story in this style might be a thinker though, but perhaps a few silhouette shots within the tale is enough...if you don't want to really challenge yourself and make a whole puppet show told only with black shapes and contours. That would be something, but it requires a lot too. We'll see what people come up with, but I know you will deliver some great shots, should you choose to take part in the 15th theme...

Some things should be challenging, to keep people on their toes!

These images can also come forth just out of nowhere, so keep your eyes peeled while playing, and you never know what will turn up...

hahaaa this is more than great, awesome theme, love it and can't wait to see what everyone will come up with. This will be for sure a little highlight for me, too Already have 3 uploaded sets for this theme...^^'

Also great invitational images, Rick! Diverse collection of thoughtful images, even with landscapes fitted for this theme, which i never really considered. Also the last image seems like a "raw" image from Izzy

Sounds like you're all set already then, Alex!

I do like taking silhouette shots myself and I wanted to add a theme with a technical angle since we've had so many about the true beauty of this game as well as some meant more or less for storytelling and atmosphere. This one will be rather open, since there's no real theme about the theme Instead, almost anything goes as long as it's presented in the silhouette style. Should be interesting or at least I hope so...

Glad you like the invitation shots! It turned out to be a mix of old shots and some additional new ones. The very last shot is actually showing a Roc - a gigantic legendary bird - but I can see it's quite close to Izzy's favorite, the Zephyr dragon...

I wanted more and newer screenshots for the presentation, but I also wanted to release this theme, so luckily I had a few old shots regarding this theme available. I think it will be a very interesting compilation in the end and hopefully people will dare themselves to try this even if it's not something they do normally. Personally, I do like the silhouette style of images!

      Thank you, Magdalena!
