About this image

Haemar's Shame.  A dark cave entrance on the Ivarstead side of the pass from Helgen.  A chill wind blew into their faces, a knife-edged force that left both of them shaking with cold.  Bishop grumbled often about wanting a fire to sit next to and maybe warm Freyda up.  Karnwyr faithfully loped alongside or behind or even in front on occasions; he was made of sterner stuff.  Once inside the cave they were out of the worst of the cold; the wind could still be heard faintly but here at least it was warmer, or relatively speaking anyway.

Light showed up and so they made their way carefully on.  Turning a corner of the rocky tunnel, a cave opened up with a constructed wooden platform on a trellis.  Walking back and forth was an iron-armoured figure.  Freyda glanced at Bishop who nodded.  One shot took him down.  They inspected the corpse when they got to him, and Bishop pointed at two marks on his neck.  "Vampires."

"Vampires?  Oh, not again.  Is this one?"

"No - some poor soul enthralled by them.  They can do that, use them as slave labour, mindless bodyguards or just - food," he twisted his face with feeling.

They went on, into another tunnel, and out onto a wooden stage.  Below was another cave, this with two occupants, a man sat at a table with his back to them, and a woman in odd leather costume stirring some kind of pot over a fire.  Bishop whispered vampire to Freyda and pointed at the woman.  Freyda struck her with a well-aimed shaft but the vampire staggered rather than fell, then straightened.  A second arrow took the vampire to eternity.  Meanwhile the man had grabbed a large two-handed hammer and had come running up the stairs towards them.  Bishop took him out with one blow.

They walked to the pot and inspected it.  Bishop chuckled.  "You know, walking behind you has its advantages," he said.

"What - you feel safe from harm?" Freyda said acidly.

"No.  Just watching your hips roll as you walk is reward enough."

Freyda spun on her heel and pointed a finger into Bishop's face.  "Now that's enough!" she snapped.  "We have a job to do here and I don't want you looking at the wrong thing, in case you fail in your job of protecting me, do you get it?  Be told!"
