About this image

Freyda decided to explore a little of the temple while she was there.  In one dusty, cobwebbed room she found the old Blades armoury. Armour, magically preserved, and swords, many like the one Delphine carried, a long, slender weapon with a slight curve.  There was a symbol on the wall behind the rack.  Slowly Freyda took one off the rack and held it.

“Dragonbane,” Delphine’s voice startled her from close behind.  “Cuts through a dragon’s hide as easily as a broadsword does through leather.  Take it;as Dragonborn you ought to carry one.”

Proudly wearing her new sword on her hip, she left the temple, Bishop and Karnwyr in attendance, they left Karthspire and passed through the camp, littered with the slain Forsworn.  In one tent she came upon a leather-bound book and idly flicked through the pages. The Legend of Red Eagle.  She was fascinated by the tale of a mighty hero of the ages whose remains and treasure were now lost.  There was a note underneath that indicated that the sword and a map as to where this was, lay not far away.  “Come on, Bishop, let’s go find us some treasure!”

“The only treasure I see is right before me,” he replied with a smile.

Freyda rolled her eyes but smiled nonetheless.  They shared an intimate moment, then set off north-west along the side of a small river valley, then up towards a couple of pinnacles of stone blocks that had been built by the ancients.  Two Forsworn stepped out of places of concealment but they were cut down by the arrows of the duo, and beyond them was a shut iron door.  “Shall we?” Freyda asked.

“Why not?  More of these animals to slaughter.”  Bishop seemed excited at the prospect of killing more Forsworn, and she wondered, not for the first time, as to why he hated them so much. History, perhaps?  Maybe one day she’d find out.  He was still very much a closed book to her and it irritated.  The door opened to reveal a tunnel that turned and switched direction a couple of times, and then there was a cavern, with a constructed pathway leading up to the top.  Steps had been cut in the rock, too.  Three Forsworn were visible, high up.  Freyda crouched, took aim, and struck home with unerring accuracy.  Her prowess as an archer was improving rapidly, as were her skills in sneaking.

The two others came running to the lip of the stone ledge, enraged.  Bishop sent one tumbling with a well-placed shot, and Freyda ran up the stairs, avoiding one hurried shot from the last defender, and sent an arrow into him that sent him to whatever afterlife he believed in.

Now she was at the top….
