The story itself was fun to read. I like how 3 "outcasts" joined together into a bit of a family. It was bitter sweet when Per left the group to go after her "spark".
Your last sentence is a hard one and one I have been struggling with for the last year big time. I have a great job with an excellent salary and benefits ... and yet it has changed over the 25 years I have been there. I want something different but bills, responsibility, the dogs, common sense (lol), tell me to stay put. A gilded prison of my own making in some ways. At least I do have some options as many do not - locked into suffering and debt. Anyhow getting off track. Just that leaving the safety of prison isn't just about fear of the unknown and risk ... but also practicality and the reality of life.
I absolutely agree with you on the whole cage dilemma. Usually, we choose to stay confined since life is what it is and grand adventures are usually grand disasters in disguise. All we can do is embrace the prisons, expand them, and build universes of our own - a thing you do perfectly with your stories and worldbuilding, for example.
