Frequently Asked Questions

My archive manager is reporting that your mod is encrypted!

If you get that message, your archive manager does not support the compression I used for the archive. (IZarc is confirmed to report this erroneous message, if there are any others, please let me know) The easiest fix for that is to install the completely free and very useful 7-zip archive manager, which is confirmed to open the archive correctly. WinRAR as well as Free Opener are confirmed to work with the archive.

If you are using one of the compatible archive managers, and you are getting a similar error - then the file got corrupted somehow, and you need to try again. Or, check your version of your archive manager. 7-zip versions older than 9.20 may not open this archive properly, among others.

Help! My game is crashing on startup!

You might be missing the DLCs, the Unofficial Skyrim Patch (and the DLC versions), and/or having load-order issues. For those, LOOT will solve just about any problems you have with the load order.

Do I need the original Better Quest Objectives?

No, you don't need to. Even the author of that mod recommends using mine in place of his older mod.

I do not have all the DLCs for Skyrim! Can I please get a version that does not require them?

No. There's too much complication to maintain a unmerged/non-DLC version of this mod, and the Skyrim users who don't have DLC are too small to really justify making a special version just for them. At this point, having all the official DLCs for Skyrim is a requirement for serious modding. If they seem a little too costly, either wait for a sale or hunt around for them at reduced price.

Will you be covering Dragonborn?

Yes. No ETA. I'd like to get a feel for it first before I do anything regarding that expansion pack.

Will you be covering other quest mods? (Falskaar, Wyrmstooth, Moonpath, etc.)

Possibly. I'd like to do the other DLC quests first before I move on to doing fan-made quests. Even then, I think I'd like to incorporate those objective changes directly in the mod itself. And it's possible that the author may have different intentions/styles in mind.

Can you use this mod with a existing game?

Yes. You completely can. The only real issue is that some already-started radiant quests can show "[...]" in the objective description instead of the location. When that does happen, you can temporary enable quest markers for the duration of the quest.

Can you make a non-English version of this mod?

By myself? No. I really only speak English. If anyone wants to do translation for this mod, go ahead and do so (be sure to PM me if you do), but don't expect *me* to do it. I've got a good few translations already, but having more is fine by me.

Will you make a version that does not require the Unofficial Skyrim Patch?

NO! If you are having severe problems with the unofficial patches, your problems are probably caused by something else - perhaps a mod conflict, perhaps a botched savegame. Problems that are caused by the patches are usually minor and fixed, as nothing is bug free. However, there's nothing about the patches that will cause a CTD, nothing that will cause slowdowns. Really, there's no point in asking me to release a version that does not require a patch. In fact, I would encourage others to use fixes from the unofficial patches whenever possible in their mods. They are as good as the official ESMs for their fixes.

This mod takes too many ESP slots! I want a merged version!

I can't provide one in the installer. Too hard to maintain, and would interfere with localization. If you want one, make one yourself - Merge plugins xEdit script is the easiest way to do so.

Your mod makes my game crash on startup! I must now kill one of your cats!

Now, before you go commit horrible crimes against pets, Skyrim crashing on startup is a sign that you are missing masters.

The most common causes of that are a) missing the Unofficial Patches, b) installing a plugin for a mod or DLC that you don't have, or c) that issue with pre-0.99.x Mod Organizer that causes the internal FOMOD installer to skip installing the main plugin (which should be long fixed). The easiest way to check if you are missing masters (and if so, what masters) is to run TES5Edit. When it asks you to load plugins, just hit OK (this will make TES5Edit load your full load order - similar to starting the game). When it encounters any plugins that miss masters, TES5Edit will error out and tell you what master plugin you are missing. If that's the case, either add the missing master, or remove the patch.

Do I have to download any of the other files?

No, no, no, no, no, no, and no. Also, no. The main file literally contains everything.

Is this mod compatible with <insert random mod here>

Check the compatibility list. If it's not listed there, check for yourself using TES5Edit. I mostly reserve compatibility patches for popular mods, or ones I use personally.

TES5Edit reports errors (specifically, null references) in the main ESP regarding CW02A and CW02B! What gives? And will it affect my game?

These null references (or "errors") are harmless, actually. Why am I so certain? They exist in the vanilla version of the records as well. It is unknown why Bethesda decided to put null quest references in those two quests (perhaps to dummy out some unfinished content), but any mods that alter those quest records (like this one) will report those completely vanilla null references when you check for errors.

Now, I will not say the same for errors other than those specific ones. Sometimes mod changes will result in this mod using references that do not exist anymore in the updated mod, and will require updates for this one. However, you can safely ignore CW02A and CW02B when checking for errors, unless something really serious happens with those quests.

William, you/your mod(s)/your mother/your doctor/your mother's doctor/your cat's beautician/your horker veterinarian is awesome. Endorsed.

Why, thanks. If you do run a mod showcase, and like this mod, it's helpful if you feature it sometime.

Can I use this with the non-Steam/cracked version of the game? (and other similar questions)

I am not at liberty to state if that will work or not. Probably not, but if you ask a question like that, you lost your account right there, because asking questions like that will imply that you are a pirate. I'm sure you'll get a long lecture on why you shouldn't pirate games, you doofus.
