He died trying to prove his worth as a hunter.
When the woman appeared at the gates of the fort he was suspect of her nature, but he spoke and walked with her to the fort. Then he seen her eyes, glowing in the dark and hungry. His fears confirm he moved to strike, but she had sensed his betrayal and was prepared, lashing out her own talon tipped hands both block his attack, and to land her own.
With little trouble she pierced his body and broke his heart. She watched him slip away, life draining from the poor man before moving on to her true target. Glancing back, she shook her head and uttered a single line.
