A Sable Reshade Preset

This is a Reshade preset that adds more depth to the cartoony, cell-shaded Sable aesthetic through the use of Ambient Occlusion, fake HDR, and other effects.

The addition of ambient occlusion gives the game much, much more detail. The cell-shaded rendering that the game utilises hides a lot of the details of meshes which the addition of ambient occlusion overcomes. This means that this preset may not be for everyone due to it's heavy departure from the original look. I personally very much enjoy it due to additional depth that is provided to the general look of the game.

The fake HDR effects and amended black levels give the colours and contrast a lot more "oomph". On top of that, this preset utilises DLAA as an alternative to the built in AA, which I found lacking. DLAA seems to be much more effective at handling the distinct border lines of all geometry and meshes and mitigates some of the very strong temporal aliasing that the game exhibits, albeit with some minorly increased softening of the image. Film grain, chromatic aberration and vignetting is added to give the resulting image a more natural, softer look.

Installation
Prerequisites: In the game's settings menu turn Antialiasing off and set Line weight to Thin.

  • Download the Depth Reshade Preset in the Files section here and place it in the game's installation directory.
  • Download Reshade.
  • Run the Reshade installer and select "Sable.exe" in the game's installation directory, when prompted.
  • Select DirectX10/11/12 (or Vulkan, if using DXVK -- see performance section).
  • Select "SableDepthPreset.ini" from the game's installation directory, when prompted for a preset.
  • Install Reshade.
  • Run the game. Reshade should compile the shaders and then enable the preset.

NOTE: The Ambient Occlusion shader requires proper access to the game's depth buffer to function. Check out the following quick guide to configure it in Reshade. It should be as straightforward as is shown in the video (ignore any mention of the RTGI shader).

Performance
The performance hit of this preset is substantial. The ambient occlusion, DLAA and HDR effects add up to a GPU usage increase of a factor of ~2. Now, since the base game hits the GPU relatively minimally, the preset should be handled well by most GPUs, but the increased stress on the GPU should be noted. In more practical terms, if your game is running at 60FPS with max GPU utilisation, expect a halfing of your FPS. Note that this is unlikely, unless you are running on very low end hardware.

If you are running in to performance issues with this preset, try turning down the Sample Quality of the MXAO shader. Do this by opening the Reshade configuration window ("Home" button, by default), unchecking the "Performance Mode" checkbox at the bottom, and setting the "Sample Quality" under "MartysMods_MXAO.fx" to a lower setting. See this screenshot for clarification.
Alternatively, disable the MXAO shader completely for more performance, or if the effect is undesired.

Another thing to note is that the base game has many performance issues, such as traversal stuttering, severe audio stuttering, and low performance in highly populated places like Eccria. None of these are related to the GPU, so Reshade would not have any effect on them (negative or positive).
Some users have reported improved performance using DXVK, a DirectX Vulkan wrapper, but it didn't improve anything for me. You are able to use DXVK with Reshade, although you will need to install the Vulkan variant (in step 4 of the Installation steps) but note that it could be the case that it causes issues with MXAO. I recommend advanced users  try this out to see if mitigates the game's inherent performance issues.
