About this mod

A fairly basic mod that tweaks a few of the game files to introduce India into the campaign of the Rome: Total War - Alexander expansion. Full unit roster, character names, and their own stature within the campaign sandbox. It's kinda restored cut content, as I found a dedicated "faction destroyed" video in the files, suggesting it was cut.

Introduces the Indian faction into the campaign of Rome: Total War - Alexander. In the base game, Taxila and the Indian region are cut off by a river and inaccessible: not only that, but its a Persian settlement, with India nowhere to be found except in custom battles and the Battle of the Hydaspes historical battle, the latter of which they are unplayable. It seems pretty damn strange to have a faction that's only available in custom battles, outside of the campaign, especially one so important to Alexander's military campaigns historically.

Many other mods have attempted to add India to the campaign, and two of the ones I've found are either broken or add additional features I didn't really want. So I thought I'd take one of said mods and take the parts I wanted for adding India, and kept those. Then I added a few extra parts that weren't in that mod and improved upon it, and now here we are.

A full list of additions made to the game in this mod:

  • The most obvious part is that India is now in the campaign as its own independent faction. Unlike other mods, no factions are removed in order to make this possible. I've also done some basic research into their history with Persia, and as such, their diplomatic stance starts with them at war with Persia, while remaining neutral to everyone else.
  • India has access to its full roster. The mod I referred to integrated India into the campaign, but for whatever reason, they had access to none of their unit roster. I've fixed that by adding every single possible Indian unit in the game to be available. I've also edited some additional files to make sure the Indian cavalry general and Indian elephant general units are specialized Indian general's bodyguards units as well. I also removed the Egyptian banners in the models folder, which allowed the game to allocate them their special Indian banners.
  • I edited the names.txt to give their family members and women dedicated Indian names and surnames.
  • Taxila is now no longer a Persian settlement, and has been allocated to India instead. I also borrowed an edited map.rwa file from the mod I downloaded that adds a stretch of land in the middle of the river that normally blocks you off from Taxila, so it is now accessible from within and without.
  • Despite all these additions, there's only so much I can do with my limited modding know-how. I can edit files, but I'm nowhere close to being able to create new models and textures. As such, things such as family member portraits, special buildings, events and army/general avatars on the campaign map are reused from the Egyptians in the base game.
  • I've added some additional things beyond just adding India to the campaign. Firstly, I've largely removed the time limit, although it's more accurate to say I've extended it...by about 9,900 turns, haha. This is more for people who want a more carefree campaign to enjoy and take their time with, instead of the more linear, time-limited campaign of the main game. I also feel this time limit would be impossible to meet with other factions such as India and Dahae, so it works for them as well. Secondly, I've removed the Alexander death condition that ends the campaign the moment Alexander dies. This rectifies the problem people have with playing non-Macedonian factions when they kill Alexander, ending their campaign instantly. This also allows you to roleplay a Macedonian empire living on beyond Alexander's grave. Thirdly and finally, I've noticed that the base game and BI both intro videos before the main menu, whereas Alexander doesn't. Well, that's now changed: I've taken the Alexander trailer and added it as an intro video in the same vein as vanilla's and BI's. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to make them skippable like in those games, so they can't be skipped. If you don't want this, you can just go to the "descr_fmv" file and delete the "no_skip" line, and the video won't be triggered.

Installation

  • Simply extract the entire "data" folder to the Steam/steamapps/common/Rome Total War Alexander/alexander and overwrite when prompted to do so.

Uninstallation

  • Make sure you back up the "data" folder before extraction, then replace the modded version with the backup to uninstall it. If you haven't backed it up, and you're using the Steam version, use the "verify integrity of game files" option and it'll restore your game to its original state.
