Funfact: I was informed that, in-game, the inventory name for this weapon is going to be the "XM9A3" The prefix designation of "X" in military firearms stands for "experimental"
Though the M9 existed since around 1985-ish, the M9A1 didn't even go into production until 2006 - RE4 takes place in 2004.
In 2011, the US Army announced they were going to hold a competition for weapons trials to select a new standard issue sidearm for their "Modular Hangun System" program. Beretta likely developed the M9A3 in anticipation to submit it for trials, though due to the specification requirements of the competition, ended up designing and submitting the "APX" sometime during 2016 instead. Either way, they'd end up losing to Sig Sauer's P320 design in 2017.
The M9A3, for civilian markets, went into production in 2014. At best, Wesker's handgun is EIGHT years too early, and would have much more appropriately been an "XM9A1" as that'd at least have fit the time table of development better...
