Red Dead Redemption 2

RDR2 - Gearing up for PC Mods!

  • Comment
Mods for Red Dead Redemption 2 might become a reality soon! The PC release of RDR2 - the epic cowboy and Western open-world game developed by Rockstar - is now only a few days away and modders around the world are gearing up for the release.

Official PC Version Trailer

Rockstar has released a new launch trailer showing off the all-new graphical and technical enhancements in the PC version. The developers have said the PC version  will be capable of running a 4K 60FPS and will be "packed full of new details and greater fidelity...from the claw marks of a passing bear at the base of a tree in Big Valley and the individual spines on a cactus in New Austin, to a train passing on a far horizon and embers sparkling in the New Hanover night sky.".

Preloading available on the Rockstar Launcher

If you've preordered Red Dead Redemption 2, you can preload the game now and jump straight into the Old West on 5th November. Make sure you have about 150GB of free storage to have enough space for the game and maybe some mods too!

What mods can we expect?

Without the game being out on PC yet, we have to take everything with a small pinch of salt. That being said, however, things do look promising as aspiring RDR2 modders believe that the game will be about as moddable as GTA V because it uses the same - albeit heavily updated - game engine.

Seeing how the modding scene for GTA V is very vibrant, this does sound like we might see some crazy mods for Red Dead Redemption 2 in a not too distant future.

Script Hook for RDR2

If you are not familiar with Script Hook for GTA V, the best way to describe it would be to say that it is an essential modding tool that allows modders to make use of the game’s scripting functions, which makes all sorts of crazy mods possible. Don’t believe me? Check out “Shark script mod” a mod that allows you to play as a shark in GTA V.

We learned from modders in the budding RDR2 modding community that Script Hook for Red Dead Redemption 2 is actively being worked on and that means that scripted, more involved mods could become a reality for RDR2 modding.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Multiplayer

FiveM is a modification for Grand Theft Auto V enabling you to play multiplayer on customised dedicated servers. The team behind FiveM announced in early October that they are keen on developing a similar client for RDR2 - RedM - and they reckon they’ll be able to release it to the public just before the holiday season towards the end of the year:

Player model Swaps

A modder going by JediJosh920 has been working on mods for the console version of the game that allow you to play as one of various NPCs, such as the four-year-old Jack Marston, a bird, an alligator, a bear, and more! Check out some of their videos showcasing the player model swap:

In sum, it all looks quite promising and we are very excited to see what the modding community will be able to do with Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC.

So, what will the future for RDR2 modding hold? Well, we’ll likely find out soon after 5th November - when the game releases on the Rockstar Games Launcher as well as the Epic Games Store and modders will finally be able to sink their teeth into the game’s code on PC.

Stay tuned for more news and updates on RDR2 modding and let us know what kind of mods you are looking forward to the most!

I have a request for 3 mods that I believe would make the game far superior.

First, can we please have a mod that removes the permanent vignette effect (The dark edges around the screen)? It is really annoying and even console players have been complaining about it for a whole year and Rockstar did nothing. I find it unacceptable that they did not include an option to toggle it off in the msnu. I and many others would really appreciate it if such a mod was created.

The second mod I believe that would greatly enhance the experience is a proper first person FOV mod and more importantly a mod that modifies the weapons.meta file to let us modify the FOV and Aim FOV values for each weapon as some of them zoom in wayy to much to be playable in combat. I know there is a first person fov mod that someone made a few days ago. I am using it but it is far from ideal as it has to be applied each session and it increases the general FOV and does not allow tweaking the different views separately.

Lastly a mod that allows Arthur to move freely while in camp. I am 23% into the game now and it is really starting to feel like a chore walking like a snail everytime I get to camp.

I hope we get mods that implement these features eventually.

    Thank you.

I just made a ReShade preset mod that reduces the vignetting. It is not 100% gone but it reduces the vignetting. You can find it here: https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/160

Beat this last year on XBox, but can't wait to play this on PC. I've been waiting on the mods for a while. Bring on the machine guns and rocket launchers.

Considering how T2 and R* consider modders the enemy of the state I'm not going to assume that modding will be a de facto thing. Most of GTA's catalog is ENB presets and model swaps. While that will certainly hit a lot of dl button presses, I can't imagine it's going to fuel a renaissance like the last go round.

Its Sad, but Nexus is the wrong page when it comes to GTA5 mods. There are much more script mods out there then enb presets an model swaps! Missions, Heists, Drug Dealing, Property, Animations, Gang Wars, Jobs, etc. I love Nexus, but if you are looking for GTA5 mods, its definitely the wrong place to look for it.

Why aren't there as many mods on nexus for GTA V? I usually just see mods for Bethesda games mainly. Are they just harder to actually mod compared to games like Oblivion and Skyrim?

If I could kindly request any mods, it would be these:

    1) Be able to rename horses with pre-set names like "Rachel" & "Buel"
    2) add more slots to the stable
    3) Make the game save-able even when cheat codes are enabled
    4) unlock tiered horses so that we can get the good horses before the epilogue.

    I thought of another one!

    5) Fishing controls- I hate the controls for fishing so much I ignore fishing completely. If someone could make the fishing controls more like Far Cry 5, that would be awesome. No more hand cramps from repetitively cranking the analogue stick.

If I think of any more I will update list.
