About this mod

This brings a very nice UI and clear cutscenes on modern systems. It does give a much better experience as it is currently, however work is still ongoing to bring further improvements to all textures.

Be sure to install the widescreen fix (in requirements)

Note: Cutscene 4k upscales are in 2 downloads. Check out the videos tab

Permissions and credits
We have a discord for upscaling efforts: https://discord.gg/CjusnUZ

The texture pack covers the UI elements and some items in the first area. It works well as it is, and work is ongoing to bring the rest of the textures in HD.

Be sure to download the widescreen patch (in requirements section)

These video upscales are different from the other package, in that they are in the original 4:3 format and meant to be used with the widescreen patch (which corrects UI elements from all being stretched)

The 4k cutscenes are a large collection, but included as maybe someone is streaming in youtube or other and wants to mitigate artifacts as much as possible.

I will try to answer any questions in the forum

How to install / try HD AI Upscale

Install uMod
  • d3d9.dll (from the uMod archive) into your psychonauts folder
  • run uMod 1.0
  • run Psychonauts
  • alt-tab to uMod, there should be Psychonauts tab. In here, click open texture/package and select the zip file downloaded
  • Can be helpful to 'save template' and 'set template default' so that you don't need to redo settings next time you load umod

Download and install from requirements Widescreen Fix, extract files into your Psychonauts folder
  •

Download uMod (link in requirements)
  •
In your psychonauts folder, rename d3d9.dll to d3d9.dll.bak

From the uMod archive, copy d3d9.dll into your Psychonauts folder

Extract the other uMod files to a directory (you can decide or something like c:\tools\umod\ )

Open the location where you extracted uMod and run the uMod.exe application

This is what it should look like (not much you can do here)
  •
From Steam, run your Psychonauts game

After the game opens, take note of the text 'press space bar to load the game' (as it's not upscaled yet)

Alt-tab back to uMod, it should now have a tab for Psychonauts

Pressing open textures/package, select the upscale textures zip downloaded from nexusmods
  •
It should look similar to this:

You can alt-tab back into the game now. If the new textures are not applied, try pressing the update / update reload buttons check.  If it worked, you will see the text for 'press space to continue' will look upscaled

Now, we want to tell uMod to save this configuration to be applied automatically. Alt-tab back to uMod and select Main-> Save template -> Save

It should look like this if the template is saved

Now, any time you wish to play upscaled Psychonauts, simply load uMod first, and then run the game normally through steam

FAQ:

Does it work with steam overlay?
I was able to open the mod and steam overlay. I do remember reading something about disabling steam overlay in psychonauts for support of controllers or something, so I don't know if it works for everyone.

The videos are in 4:3 and I have 16:9 display, will it work?
Yes, the idea is to use the Widescreen fix - which when the videos play there will be a letter-box to the left and right of the video.
