Profile of Altorian
Its creator Altorian agreed to an interview for a profile piece on Dragon Age Nexus.
Altorian explains that the mod manager is intended to do exactly what the name suggests. It manages mods created by the community and Bioware.
Users previously had to use the DAupdater and manually edit the files and folders to get the mods to work. With the Dragon Age mod manager they have a centralised program to manage all mod related activites.
Altorian comes from Germany and works in the IT industry there. He is interested in games, videos, computer hardware, and programming.
Altorian greatly enjoyed Dragon Age and wished to support the game and its community. However since he says he is not too skilled at creating textures or stories but is capable of some programming he tried to contribute as best he could.
He said that the original method of mod management was cumbersome so he created his own manager.
Altorian has been surprised at the level of response that his mod manager has received. Due to english being his second language he says that the effort required to provide support for the mod is much higher than he expected.
The language barrier has proven to be the greatest obstacle in the whole development and support process. While the mod manager was originally released on 8 March 2010 Altorian has been providing support ever since.
Dragon Age Nexus has not seen the same level of growth in the mods as the other Nexus sites. Altorian says that the biggest reason behind this is due to the toolset.
"It is not so user friendly as that of Bethesda's and is very unstable. But Dragon Age is still a great game with a great community," said Altorian.
The Dragon Age mod manager is one of the more complex projects that Altorian has worked on. He created Oblivion and Fallout 3 mods for friends and spent many years modding Ultima online, but nothing like the mod manager.
Supporting the mod manager means that Altorian deals with a lot of feedback.
"Negative feedback is almost better than positive feedback because it lets me know what I have to repair or what the users don't like," said Altorian.
"This obviously requires the users to tell me what the problem is. Saying 'it does not work' is not very helpful."
"But I'm still human and so some positive feedback definitely makes me happy," he said.
Dragon Age Nexus thanks Altorian for the work on his mod and responses for this story.
