About this mod

Shifts sources of player income to focus on deliberate choices instead of passively accumulating wealth. We're not investors, we're adventurers, who do things, and stuff.

If you've played Deadfire for any length of time, you are probably aware that the watcher quickly becomes overwhelmingly flush with coin just by selling off the loads of booty they inevitably loot off of slain enemies. This mod does not prevent the player from accruing massive wealth, but it does slow it down, and ideally forces the player to choose to go out and do things or make decisions for the sake of their finances.

What this mod changes:

  • Cash received from selling items is reduced by a factor of 4 (-75%), meaning that a sword you used to be able to sell for 1000 will now only get you 250. You can think of this as most vendors being hesitant to trade in dubious loot still damp with the former owner's blood.

  • Cash received from quests & tasks has been increased by 4x, but note that many quests do not provide a cash reward, so if you need money you'll want to choose the right employer and consider demanding a reward (it's for a good cause, after all)

  • Cash rewards from Bounties are increased by 5x. If you want money now, take on a bounty.

  • Reaching 5 positive (unmixed) reputation with the Pricipi, or allying with them for Ukaizo, makes all of their vendors willing to purchase from you at significantly higher prices. Crookspur Slavers will also buy for the same prices if you side with them over the wahaki. Harbormaster port merchants are included, so you don't have to leave the world map to sell off all your loot. The idea is that if you want to make real cash from your murderous plunder, then you need access to the black markets, and so your character is going to have to be a violent opportunist or slaver. It is much easier to attain the good slaver rates than the pirate ones, but most players seem unwilling to side with slavers just for spare cash. The things we do for money, eh?

  • Certain rare special items have been marked to sell for tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of coins. These are rare items that cannot be purchased and must be found out in the world. All of these items combined can provide a huge amount of currency. While they are worth a great deal under normal circumstances, they can also be moved through black markets for absolutely massive amounts of money. Full list of items below.

With these changes, all watchers will take much longer to reach the "Money no longer matters" stage (unless they are greedy bastards who are seeking it out). After some time, watchers who gain access to the black market will get even richer than they would have been in the base game, while goodie-goodie characters will want to seek out profitable employers and rare items to keep themselves comfortable. In short, different characters will have different experiences, which is the whole point of a roleplaying game.

Rare items with boosted value:
Kraken's Eye
Rinco's Earring
Magma Dragon Gizzard Stone
Blackwood Log
Culmination Stone
Porokoa's Eye
Outer Godseed Fragment 1
Outer Godseed Fragment 2
Godseed Inner Core
Mythical Adra Stone
An Infested Almanac of Crop Rotation (with a warning)
Disenchanted Amulet of Animation
Neriscyrlas' Hope
Tooth of Toamowhai
Weight of Revelation
Chain of Rightful Authority
Crown of the Exiled Queen

If you have any ideas for additions to this list, or anything to add or feedback in general, please post it!
I will be looking for rare shinies to add to this list during my current playthrough.
