Bethesda forums and websites hacked: usernames, emails, and passwords potentially taken

  • Comment
GStaff has just announced via the BethBlog that the Bethesda forums and websites were the subject of a hacking attempt/attack over the weekend. GStaff claims that no financial info was taken but usernames, emails, and passwords may have been accessed.

If you have an account over on the Bethsoft forums, changing your password is recommended. If you use the same password on the Nexus (or other sites) it is definitely a good idea to change those passwords as well.

At the moment Bethesda has not sent out any email notice to users. The only notices are posted on the BethBlog and a selection of subforums (the general discussion forums of only some games).

Over the past weekend, a hacker group attempted an unlawful intrusion of our websites to gain access to data. We believe we have taken appropriate action to protect our data against these attacks. While no personal financial information or credit card data was obtained, the hackers may have gained access to some user names, email addresses, and/or passwords. As a precaution, we recommend that all our fans immediately change passwords on all our sites — including our community forums and the statistics site we maintain for Brink players.

If your username/email address/password is similar to what you use on other sites, we recommend changing the password at those sites as well. As we don’t know what further plans the hackers may have, we suggest that you keep an eye out for suspicious emails and account activity.

We regret any inconvenience that these attacks on us cause for you. These attacks will be evaluated to determine if there are any additional protections we might take that would be prudent.

Update: Via GamePro, it appears that LulzSec has claimed responsibility for the breach.

Yep. KeePass is an awesome little utility. I started using it after the last time Bethesda got hacked because I got tired of having to make the rounds everywhere to update my password when something went wrong.

Good thing my password was unique to that site only. I use KeePass to store all my various account info which makes such hacks useless for my accounts at any other site.<img class=">

Here are the steps I took to get everything working again on Bethsoft forums:

    • I used their Forgot Password link which sent an activation link via email.
    • Opened the email, clicked on the activation link, it then wanted to reset the password which then sent another email with the password in it.
    • I opened the next email, copied the password and logged in with their generated password.
    • I immediately clicked on Settings and changed the password to a new one.
    • I logged out and logged back in with my new password to make sure it worked right.
    • Recorded that password in my KeePass database.

    All done.<img class=">

The Bethesda forum was hacked again this morning and the password DB reset. Anyone trying to get in will have to follow the password recovery process. Assuming it works and doesn't tell you your member ID doesn't exist.

Oh, and please don't use the same username and password, (no matter how strong) on all your internet sites!

Wish I had known this BEFOREHAND.

    What?

A marketing dept.-driven name change? No big deal.

EA wanting to push its own digital distribution environment, rather than giving that money to Valve (Steam), or Gamefly (D2D)? I would want to distribute my games through my own channels too.

EA trying to catch-up to Valve with a RT gaming community (Chat, Multiplayer, etc.)? They better, or they'll get left behind! <img class=">

The name of your EA account has changed. Going forward, your EA account will be called an Originâ„¢ account. Your login and password are the same, and all EA account information is in your Origin account.

Origin is EA's new gaming platform where you can find, purchase and download all the best content from EA. It's your digital playground for EA games and exclusive content.

The Origin application is available for download at www.origin.com. This desktop application will allow you to connect with friends, and see what they are playing. You can also manage your games library and digitally download and play games from EA.

    Oh boy. Thanks EA.

I haven't been home for about a month, so I get back and change my email password because someone told me that they got some weird link from me. Well I changed it and read that Yahoo had been having problems where people's accounts would send links to prescription medicine (...viagra, how nice for my family to get emails from my like that)to their contacts. Then I saw the Bioware email. Then I saw on here the thing about Bethesda. If I had stayed away any longer, when I got home I would have discovered the world is ending! Jk. This is really aggravating though, I hope these losers get whats comin for em.

Me too... <sighs> The old BioWare Boards site was my oldest, continuously active site registration.

Now, not only do I have to change my EA password, (which wasn't the same anyway) but they've taken the entire legacy site down, so my NWN and other BioWare game keys aren't currently available to me.

(On-line,that is. I have the discs and manuals, of course. And I put a sticky label with the key directly on all my discs AND their cases, since I've learned the hard way that you can't read the stupid key on the disc when it's IN the drive! <img class="> )

Email I received this morning from Aaryn Flynn GM BioWare Edmonton...

We recently learned that hackers gained unauthorized access to the decade-old BioWare server system supporting the Neverwinter Nights forums. We immediately took appropriate steps to protect our consumers’ data and launched a thorough ongoing evaluation of the breach. We have determined that no credit card data was compromised from the servers, nor did we ever have or store sensitive data like social security numbers. Our investigation shows that information such as user names, encrypted passwords, email addresses, mailing addresses, names, phone numbers, CD keys and birth dates from these forum accounts on the system may have been compromised, as well as other information (if any) that you may have associated with your EA Account. In an abundance of caution, we have changed your password to ensure account security. Please visit this [link] to reset your password immediately.

We take the security of your information very seriously and regret any inconvenience this may have caused you. If your username, email address and/or password on your EA account are similar to those you use on other sites, we recommend changing the password at those sites as well. We advise all of our fans to always be aware of any suspicious emails or account activity and report any suspicious emails and account activity to Customer Support at 1-877-357-6007.

If you have questions, please visit our FAQ at http://support.ea.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5367/ or contact Customer Support at the phone number above.
