Oblivion

Interview with Edge magazine

  • Comment
Back in January when I blogged about money and running these sites a lot of people expressed an interest in what I’d written and surprise at how I ran things and how I think. This in turn surprised me; I didn’t think many people would be very interested, it’s only me. Similarly a few online publications got in contact to set up interviews with me on the topic, something I’m more than happy to oblige with. While I only ended up doing one interview as the interest seemed to die down the results have been summarized, quite heavily, in to an article on the Edge magazine website.

I’m an extremely opinionated person and very happy to be extremely open and candid both online and offline with how I express myself. I’m always really happy to be myself and tell people exactly what I think irrespective of whether I’m right or wrong or broaching difficult and controversial subjects, because I hate insincerity. As far as I’m concerned you should say what you mean and mean what you say, while trying to remain respectful. It doesn’t always work out like that, but hey, I try. I don’t want the image of me to be some corporate bigwig who only says things that I think will appease others and broaden my appeal to the masses, I want to be myself and if people don’t like that then so what!? We were never going to get along anyway. I’m not here to be everyone’s best friend, I’m here because I want to run a good modding community that really helps and supports modding. Sometimes the two don’t go hand-in-hand, and it wasn’t a particularly hard lesson for me to learn.

In the few interviews I’ve done they always start out formal; question, answer, question, answer and then just end up with us talking for a good hour or so about anything and everything under the sun to do with games. Mainly because I just cannot stick to one subject and have to go off on tangents as issues get raised (my teachers in school diagnosed me with “verbal diarrhea”). This interview was no exception, and I enjoyed it just for the great chat. And I’m always open to do more.

A couple of years ago I ran a little fun night with the Amnesia: The Dark Descent demo on Mumble. Around 30 of us got in to the voice comms and played through the demo together while having a good chat and laugh together. It had a nice sense of community to it and I know the people who took part enjoyed it. It also gave members a chance to chat to me openly and ask me questions which I answered back freely. I’d like to start up something similar, but honestly, time just isn’t on my side these days. It’s not the turning up that’s the problem, it’s the organising it. I’ll try my best to get something like this done soon, and if you have any ideas on what we can do, fire away.

This is, by far, the best modding forum I've found. It's the only place I truly contribute to, and I have never thought of leaving. The admins are great, the other users are great and everything is set out so great! I congratulate you for all the work you have put into the Nexus, and on behalf of the whole community, we thank you!

The Nexus is by far the best modding site I've ever come across, the amount of work, dedication and pure passion that is displayed by everyone is genuinely heart warming. It really makes me feel like the gaming industry hasn't quite yet become just a shallow money harvesting machine *cough* EA *cough*. I totally agree with the monetization of modding being a bad thing for the community, it will simply stifle creativity in the long run and damage the strong sense of community.

If the Nexus were to go down...I think it would be one of the final nails in the coffin for my enjoyment of gaming (I am also 26 and getting rather cynical in my "old" age).

I can't thank you enough for running the site, you are literally a hero.

my daughter is older than you by 6 years and I play video games now more than I have have in my life. This site is one of the big reasons for my interest.

I have played Oblivion and extra couple of times because of all the great mods I encounter here

The Nexus is 100% the best non-corporate gaming company made website around today. And if you're looking for mods... pfft. You might as well not worry about mods if the game isn't hosted through the Nexus website.

Wish I could be a supporter but I can barely afford the games I play.

You are doing a good job, and Nexus is WAY BETTER than elderscrolls.com even.

The Nexus is, in my humble opinion, the best site around for modding and improvement. The people here are kind, and understand that progress can't be done without a lot of bug-testing.... and time... many just don't have the patience to wait or contribute to the work being done, they are certainly missing out!

    Long live the Nexus

How about introducing a donate button on the otherwise useless free space? For sure a site like this has a lot of things to pay for, let alone the thousands of downloads and almost permanent support. May sound strange from a member who even isn't a premium member - there are reasons for it, I don't agree with some of the policies applied here. Doesn't mean I wouldn't support it, at least half of my mods come from here, using this servers and hd-requests.

Becoming a premium member is exactly you support this site. Or become a Supporter instead, giving donations in small amounts instead.

Its easy enough to toss them a few $'s, in a blog dark posted a while back he basically said if everyone who used the site gave just a dollar they would be set for cash for a very long time.

Glad to say i love the nexus sites, and you may not guess it by when this account was made but I've been downloading mods from the nexus sites for a long time.I'm not great with giving praise, but the Nexus is a Beacon to modders of what you can achieve with caring admins and considerate members.
In my opinion the Nexus sites are the best sites on the internet for modders to get appreciated, and for that i can't thank you enough.

You and the mod authors are the best! I can't tell you how many mods I have, (embarrassed) but I HAVE to check this site every day to find new ones. It makes my Skyrim experience so much better. I really think you guys have done an awesome job, and I give my small "donation" as often as possible in the form of being a Premium Member. I hope more people will do the same.

Great job, and I probably would not have over 1700 hours of game time without NMM and the NEXUS.

From my point of view, I believe we are so fortunate to have a place like this to find &/or share mods. I first came the Nexus to make Oblivion my own and found so much more than I had imagined. On the flip side of the coin, the Steam experience was shockingly bad for me. I spent one of the longest afternoons of my life navigating the site and searching for mods. The search for mods was totally useless, awful. I was more frustrated that one day than I ever was for the hundreds of hours I have used this site. I vowed never to return to that wretched place (unless forced to, ugh). I thank you for creating, maintaining and nurturing these sites. I am sure it is a thankless task at times but please know your tireless dedication is appreciated by many, many folks! This place supports FREE, and amazingly creative works from all over the world and that is success to me. Cheers and thanks so much!!
