This mod makes all of the player owned horses and hopefully all of the quest horses invincible. They also should stay where you left them, never attempting to return home.
Shadowmere will also stay where you left her, not returning to fort farragut.
Why? Because it kind of sucks when you're riding your horse and it dies because you ran down a hill.
It also kind of stinks when they wander off and you have no idea where they went.
Just flagging them essential is OK, but if you fell off of a large hill the horse would pass out and you would be injured and possibly die.
This is my solution to that problem =P
