Balanced Spellmaking

Description

It is very easy to unbalance the game using the spellmaking feature in the vanilla game. Pretty much everyone is aware of the obvious exploits like weakness stacking, 100 point spell effects for 1 second, or Drain Health for 1 second. Creating such spells is both cheap and requires very little skill. There's a handy page of game-breaking spells on the UESP.

This mod simply addresses these balance issues by adding limits to the duration and magnitude of certain spell effects. The general changes are:
  • Increased Minimum Durations - Effects that can be exploited by using 1 second durations now have a minimum duration. You can't charm someone for 1 second if the minimum duration is now 30 seconds.
  • Increased Maximum Durations - The maximum duration limit has been increased for effects that have default spells with durations longer than 120 second, e.g. Feather and Light.
  • Instant Effects - Some effects will now allow 0 second duration (i.e. instant). This includes Absorb, Damage, and Restore effects.
  • Increased Maximum Magnitudes - The maximum magnitude of Dispel has been increased to better match the magnitudes available from default spells.

In each case, the new limits were inspired by cross-referencing with default spells available to purchase from merchants or from spell tomes.

These changes effectively remove most of the possible exploits of the magic system. Whilst it is still possible to do some exploits, it is now much more difficult. The higher durations mean that spells will cost more gold to make, take more magicka to cast, and require higher skill.

This mod works by implementing a simple framework for applying individual limits to each spell effect, which isn't possible in the vanilla game. Using the customisation file included, you can use this framework to set your own custom limits for any effect. This includes the option to undo any changes that the mod includes by default.

Minor Known Issue:

If you set the magnitude or duration of a spell to a value outside of the default range (3 to 100 for magnitude and 1 to 100 for duration) and then click on the effect to edit it, the value will change to value within the default range. For example, if you set the duration of a Fire Damage spell to 0 but then edit the effect before creating the spell, the duration will default to 1 when the effect window opens. You can simply change it back again, so this is a minor issue and does not affect created spells.

Installation

This mod requires the xOBSE.

Standard installation procedure: install with your mod manager of choice and activate. I recommend Mod Organizer 2.

Load order does not matter since this mod edits no records.

Customisation

You can fully customise the duration and magnitude ranges for all spell effects when spellmaking using the included INI file. Instructions are provided in the file itself.

Uninstallation

Simply remove the mod.

Compatibility

This mod simply uses scripts to edit the scrollbar bounds when using the spellmaking menu. It should be compatible with everything.
