About this mod

This is a rebalance mod for the Skeleton Key.

When you use the Skeleton Key too much, it will flee and disappear. You'll have to find the key again.

Description:
With this mod installed, if you attempt to pick a lock a certain number of times while carrying the Skeleton Key, the key will disappear from your inventory. 

Consequently, during this time, the benefit of the "unbreakable lockpick" will be lost. However, the buff to the Security skill will be weakened (from 40pts to 20pts) but still remains.

After a certain period has elapsed (default within 1000 ~ 2000 (approximately three months) in-game hours), the Skeleton Key may reappear in a container with a 'Very Hard' lock level. If you manage to retrieve the key, the full benefit of the Skeleton Key will be restored. However, keep in mind that the key will escape from you multiple times.


Uninstallation:
To uninstall this mod, you can simply deactivate the ESP. 
If you want to retrieve the Skeleton Key, it is recommended to first edit the "set AWVars.Restore to 0" in ArtifactWeaker.ini to "set AWVars.Restore to 1" before uninstalling.


Details:
  • The remaining uses of the Skeleton Key are determined between 300 and 1000 by default.
  • The remaining uses of the Skeleton Key decrease when picking locks by moving the lockpick vertically or performing an auto-attempt. Auto-attempts reduce the uses more quickly.
  • Harder locks result in a greater reduction in remaining uses.
  • The time it takes for the Skeleton Key to reappear in a container after disappearing ranges from 1000 (2000/2) to 2000 in-game hours by default. This time can be further reduced by up to 25% based on the player's Luck, Fame, and Infamy.
  • When opening a container with a Very Hard lock level, there is a (20 + player's Luck/5) percent chance that the Skeleton Key will appear inside that container. This chance increases with each successful opening of a container with a Very Hard lock level.
  • If you forget to retrieve the reappeared Skeleton Key from a container, there's no need to worry. It will appear in another container with a Very Hard lock level.
  • Parameters such as remaining uses, time until reappearing, etc., can be adjusted in ArtifactWeaker.ini.


Reason for Creating This:
I love the lockpicking mini-game in Oblivion, but at the same time, I love the overpowered nature of the Skeleton Key, which allows me to pick locks by rapidly pressing a key. To combine both aspects, I created this Mod.

The idea of the Skeleton Key disappearing is inspired by the following lore:

"The two limitations placed on the Key by wizards who sought to protect their storehouses were that the Key could only be used once a day and it would never be the property of one thief for too long, eventually disappearing."
In reality, the key wouldn't be captured so easily by the player as in this Mod and should disappear for a long time, so it might not be lore-friendly after all. Nevertheless, I simply liked the idea of the key escaping.
