Oblivion Character Overhaul

Description

Oblivion Character Overhaul is great, but it causes a tonne of compatibility issues and is full of spurious dirty edits to NPCs.

This is a replacement for the original Oblivion Character Overhaul esp plugin, but with all the NPC and hair edits removed. This still means you get the original mod's new race visuals, just without the specific hand-changed NPC face edits and the new rebellious teenager haircuts.

This mode was made for several reasons:

  • Primarily, removing the NPC edits removes the cause of almost all conflicts and the need for 99% of existing patches for the original mod. You still get almost all of the new character visuals, because the Race edits still redirect to nuska's new models and textures. That means you can still use the Seamless mods with this, and any other mods which add new visuals. All you're missing out on is the hand-made NPC face edits, which you probably won't notice unless you're looking at side-by-side comparisons of specific NPCs.
  • The new hair mesh replacers didn't fit with the vanilla game at all. They are now replaced with the original vanilla hair meshes.
  • I took the opportunity to forward any fixes from the Unofficial Patches (there was only 1).

Basically, I made this mod so I could recommend it in my vanilla plus guide Through the Valleys without causing a tonne of conflicts.

Installation

This mod still requires the original Oblivion Character Overhaul be installed first.

Standard installation procedure: add the file to your data folder, overwriting the original mod's esp file, and check in the game launcher or your mod manager of choice. Of course, I recommend Mod Organizer 2, so just load this after the original in your mod list.

Uninstallation

Just uncheck the mod. Uninstalling this mod will have no permanent effects on your save game.

Compatibility

If you are using existing patches for Oblivion Character Overhaul, uninstall them. You don't need them anymore.

You will only need compatibility patches for mods which edit race records, which are almost exclusively limited to mods that:
  • Add new hair or eyes.
  • Edit racial body or head parts.
  • Edit racial starting stats.
  • Edit racial disposition bonuses.

However, I've included all the relevant bash tags, so all you should need to do to resolve these conflicts is load the other mods after this and rebuild your bashed patch.
