Potion Bottle Variation Restoration
Requirements:
Oblivion Script Extender

Description

In the game files you can find several different potion bottle models, with different colouration depending on the magic school of the potion effects. These are:

  • Alteration: White
  • Conjuration: Yellow
  • Destruction: Red
  • Illusion: Light Green
  • Mysticism: Pink
  • Restoration: Blue

It's clear that at some point in development it was intended that these bottles be used to give some visual distinction between different potions, but the idea was dropped, maybe due to inconsistencies arising from multi-effect or player-crafted potions, or because the green Illusion bottle was visually similar to poison bottles.

This mod simply restores the colour variation for ALL vanilla and Shivering Isles potions using a single lightweight script. This sets it apart from other similar mods, as it means there are no record edits whatsoever, so this mod is compatible with EVERYTHING. Obviously, it'll overwrite other potion bottle replacer mods, but clearly you don't need this if you use them. All vanilla potions have been covered, except multi-effect and player-crafted potions, which retain the default pink colour. Poisons aren't covered by default either, as they're almost all of the Destruction school and I think the toxic green colour suits them better. Icons remains the same for all potions; the only difference is in world models.

I've included an optional file for those that would like poisons to be correctly coloured for their respective schools; however, I wouldn't recommend this as it'd cause confusion for the few non-Destruction effects (Silence, Paralysis, Burden). Player-crafted poisons will still retain the default green colour too, as will icons, so the mismatch between icon and model is much greater. Still, the option's there.

Installation

This mod requires:

Stnadard installation procedure: add the file to your data folder and check in the game launcher or your mod manager of choice. Load order will have no effect on this mod's functionality, so put it wherever you want.

Uninstallation

This mod can be uninstalled at any time and will have no permanent effects on your game.

Compatibility

This mod won't conflict with anything. End of. However, it only covers vanilla and Shivering Isles potions, but can easily be expanded to work with potions from other mods if you know your way around TESIVEdit. Simply open both mods in TESIVEdit, then add the new potions to the "afPotionsXXX" leveled lists, where XXX is the relevant magic school (Alteration, Destruction, etc). I'd recommend doing so in a new file as overwrites.
