Version 1.0

Description:

This mod adds a book that you can use to view information about your character's class, skills, and attributes. All the information is updated as appropriate and accessible through an intuitive series of menus. It is also capable of reflecting the changes made by other mods - e.g. mods which change which skills are governed by which attributes, or mods which change the requirements for attribute bonuses.

You will receive the skill diary shortly after starting the game (you must be in an exterior cell). It is not a quest item so you can drop it. If you lose it somehow you'll have to spawn yourself a new one.

In my opinion, the main use of the Skill Diary is to view your current attribute bonuses so you can maximise your attributes when leveling up. This makes it easier to gain +5/+5/+5(1) bonuses as you don't have to manually keep a record of what skills you've increased. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it might help to read the leveling pages on the UESP. I've also included other useful leveling information, such as:

  • A detailed description of how attribute bonuses are awarded, as well as how many skill increases are required for each bonus;
  • Information about how many major skill increases you have, and which skills are governed by which attribute (so you don't have to drop out of the diary to check your stats);
  • Progress tracking for each skill, allowing you to determine how quickly the skills level up from which actions;
  • Details about your class and specialisation.

I was inspired by mods such as SD Skill Diary, however that mod does not utilise OBSE and so needs to have scripts constantly
running in order to track skill updates, as well as several other limitations.

My mod does not suffer from such limitations, as it uses OBSE functions to get information directly from the game when you request it (by reading the book). As such, this mod is much more lightweight, accurate, and powerful.

If you use a mod which drastically changes the vanilla system of attribute bonuses, then the information shown by the diary may not be accurate. Nothing catastrophic can happen, however.

There is one minor limitation (and it's a difficult one to describe). Usually the attribute bonuses shown by the diary are for the level you're currently working towards. By default settings it takes 10 major skill increases to gain a level. That means if you're level 1, and have increased major skills 15 times, you've already gained level 2 (though you might not have slept to actually level-up), and are half of the way towards level 3. Therefore the bonuses displayed are the current values for level 3 - these are the one's you should be interested in as the level 2 bonuses have already been 'locked in'. However, this is not the case if the final skill increase needed to gain a level in awarded by a script or through the console, instead of gained normally through use. In this case the attribute bonuses will become 'stuck' until you sleep to level-up. This is an engine bug and unfortunately there's nothing I can do. However, through normal gameplay it is unlikely you'll even notice it; there are only a handful of scripted skill increases in the vanilla game and the bug will only occur if they are your last needed skill increase. The bug will also fix itself through normal gameplay so it's a bit of a non-issue - just making you aware, though.
