Rabbit holes were inspired by a comment Lycan Enforcer made.

There are 17 Rabbit Holes scattered around Tamriel, ranging from Anvil to Dive Rock to Leyawiin. Linked to the surface by pillars that normally mark imperial city graves, and other objects. Each surface pillar has been placed in useful locations.

Holes of the Rabbit by Studius Mucius

Years of study at the Arcane University had taught me many things. But this pillar was nothing I'd ever seen before, though I could feel it was magical, I didn't know what it did, and so hadn't cast any spells near it, just in case one of them activated some defense mechanism. My hand ached to touch it, but no fool survives the University and I survived, so I backed off some feet, and cast protections against whatever magic it might unleash upon my hapless form.

On touch, though, it was not what I suspected. I was grabbed by an invisible hand, and drawn through a magical portal into an underground chamber, obviously of Alyeid construction. The panel behind me though still old, was familiar. It looked identical to the one in the University, that lead to the council chamber. Brushing it with just a finger, I was sent back to the surface. The council portal appearently was locked, requiring a word that while common knowledge amongst the mages, was none the less a barrier against those who might enter unannounced. This seemed to have no such word, suggesting only a touch was needed. I re-entered the portal, this time prepared for what I saw. Behind the portal stood a pillar, glowing welkynd crystals, ancient Alyeid relics of an era gone still shone with the power bound within them. I crossed the chamber, walking around the pillar. The light seemed mighty for what cast it, and looking to the roof, I saw a mate to the pillar, more crystals, these crumbled, but held by a grate for just such a purpose, though they glowed no less brightly than those below. Before me stood another portal. Protections refreshed, I pressed my palm to the portal.

This new chamber seemed the same as the old, leading me to believe that perhaps they were one and the same, linked by some ancient secret simply to change portals, for indeed where lay two before, now four greeted my gaze. I stepped to the closest, and pressed my hand upon it. This time I was transported not to another room, but to another pillar, identical to the first. My gaze cast about and to the south, high on it's protected hilltop, sat Kvatch. I was amazed, two hours by foot, and an hour by horse, and traversed in a few moments. A growling told me I should cease my wonderment, and make my self scarce, lest I be forced to defend myself. I pressed my self against the pillar even as the wolf leapt. It must have hit the pillar but did not follow. Perhaps the Ayleid keyed it to the minds of men and mer to keep the wild beasts from infesting the ways.

Or perhaps they were intended for the purpose I had just put them to. Perhaps for frightened rabbits to hide within. Whether true or not, I was for one glad of these rabbit holes. I found that a moment or so with my map let me pin point the locations of the first two and while the other locations proved not so dangerous, I made sure to make my presence as unknown as possible, while making my person as invulnerable as possible each time.

Upon my return to the Imperial City, I learned that the portals in the University were there when the Mages Guild moved in though they knew the making. The symbols were indeed the same, as I looked at my sketch of the portals. I also learned that the symbol in it's entirety was one of the basics of transportation magic and teleportation in particular. They were surprised to learn of a portal within the city, and promised to keep a watch over it, though I found later that they had decided not to tell the imperial legion, though the Battlemages were told and warned to only reveal it should the city come under siege. So this book goes into the mystic archives, not to be revealed to the uninitiated.
