When I heard that this texture pack would slow down Oblivion, I immediately wanted tried out QTP3 Redimized. Looking at the pictures for both the original and Redimized, they looked identical. I've played through Redimized and it looked amazing. The team that did that package did a good job for those who were looking for an alternative to get nice textures with some gains of FPS.
I was still curious for the longest time, because sometimes pictures don't do justice. I downloaded this, the original. Granted, it's larger in file size, but there is indeed a difference. I am now using this over Redimized.
NOTE: This isn't a claim to say which package is better, but more of a review for comparison.
I'm one of those people that wastes so much putting my face up to textures just to admire them. This is where I see the difference.
At a distance, Redimized and the original look 1 in the same. Even at a few feet difference. Redimized seems to use a more unrealistic approach in parallax mapping with flatter, black maps whereas the original does it just right and isn't blurry. This is mostly noticable if you have an up-close and personal fetish like I have. Simply put, it's a matter of how much of the texture retains looking 3d the closer you get to it. Rocks are a major difference.
The verdict: Both are outstanding packages and have extreme care taken to them. If you want the smaller files and don't care about getting face-to-face with textures and it still look like QTP3, then Redimized is for you. If you can handle the size and are nitpicky, the original may be for you.
I personally endorse both versions. It's just me, I usually spend more time gazing at Oblivion's beauty than playing it. That isn't to say I don't play it. I know the game front & back I'm so obsessed.
