Author's Notes:

Merynne was a wonderful dark character to play. I loved her with Ren's hair and the EyeCandy body (not required). She was a great assassin and bowman. She is now retired and is only serving as the Listener of the Dark Brotherhood.

Backgound:

Merynne has never had an easy life. Family life was difficult, and she learned to rely on herself at a young age. She always made her own rules and it seemed those rules always rubbed someone the wrong way. But she doesn't really care. Merynne lives in the world by her own selfish standards. An uncontrollable personality, Merynne is a rebellious and angry person.

She's quite familiar with street life, living by whatever means she can. Drinking, gambling, skooma addictions and illilcit activities are her ways of dealing with the hard life that is hers every day. Merynne takes to the sewers and darker areas of town when she has run-ins with the law.

She prefers daggers as weapons because they're easy to conceal on her body. In her pursuit of refining skooma, she's picked up some alchemy skills and makes potions for herself when needed. She's intelligent. In order not to reveal this to others, she keeps her thoughts to herself, but her mind analytically plots and plans...

With empty pockets and the need for skooma growing stronger in her blood, she watched the local jeweler and his wife close up shop. Merynne had been patient this week, watching them, looking for a pattern...it didn't take long to determine one. Every day at 8 pm they'd go for dinner at the
inn down the street. They would return to the shop by 9:30 pm and go to bed in their upstairs apartment. Merynne had already contacted the fence to wait for her as she knew tonight would be the night. When all was clear she made her way stealthily across the street to the shop door. There was no moon tonight - the perfect darkness concealed her nimble fingers and she adeptly picked the lock to the shop. She quickly pocketed the gemstones in the cabinet. Merynne began to work the lock on one of the display cases holding several jeweled necklaces when she heard what sounded like a key in the door! She tried to hide but it was too late. The jeweler and his wife had forgotten something and had returned to the shop - Merynne was caught! The wife screamed and the jeweler made his way toward Merynne, intending to hold her until the guards arrived. Adrenalin rushed through Merynn's body - what to do? The jeweler caught her from behind and forced his rough hold around her and she scrambled to be free. Her thoughts fell on the dagger in her boot. Her shaky hand - was it the adrenaline or skooma withdrawl? - found its way to the dagger's hilt and she slid it free. With all her might she twisted her body around to face the jeweler, his hot breath on her face. Merynn's dagger sliced into him, and he dropped hard to the floor. Footsteps approached hard and fast, and she desperately glanced left and right for any way to escape. That's when she noticed the door hidden under the tapestry. She whipped out a lockpick and put it between her teeth.

Hurriedly she lifted the tapestry corner, feeling for a lock. When her fingers found it she took the lockpick and inserted it in the lock. Her fingers shook as she furiously attempted to lift the tumblers. The third tumbler broke her lockpick and she fumbled for another. "Stop right there, criminal scum!" Merynn's body was crushed to the floor as three guards piled on her, holding her down. As they lifted her and put her in wrist irons, a guard demanded, "Pay the court a fine, or serve your sentence. Your stolen goods are now forfeit." Merynn had no money for a fine. Her blood was now screaming for skooma; her body for freedom. But she found none of either.

Uriel Septim. He trusted me with this amulet, she thought. "Fool!" she whispered. He said he dreamed about me. "Ha! He wishes I was in his dreams!", her thoughts escaping into a sure, fox-like grin across her lips. Somehow though, she couldn't get out of her mind that look in his eyes. She could read people well and she saw his whole life in his eyes. His grand upbringing, court-folk always around him, the doldrum of his daily duties, the dangers of a man of his rank, the adventure. The full life...and now his untimely death. He had an air of confidence and was so accepting and ready for his upcoming fate, she thought. I never met anyone like him. "How could I ever aspire to be someone so proud and good as him?" The sense of that thought flickered and flirted in her mind and was as hard to grasp as the elusive wild horses she'd heard about in tales. She felt she was at a crossroads in her life, right here, right now, in front of this sewer gate. Holding the Amulet of Kings gingerly in her open palm, she thought she could step through that gate and continue on with her life as is - find her fence and sell this huge red rock for quite a bit of skooma and many wild nights at the inns across Tamriel with her street buddies. She could also deliver this gem to that Jauffre guy in hopes he gives her a reward - maybe it would be enough to buy her the wolf she's been wanting as a companion and guardian to protect her from other street thieves while she's sleeping. Or maybe, she could use this opportunity to change her life totally. Jauffre was the key - to touch and connect just a bit the full, honorable adventuresome life of Uriel Septim.

Merynne gazed down at the Amulet, wrapped her fingers tightly around it, and stepped through the sewer's gate...
