EDIT: In order to rate this 'mod' you'll have to download the file (even though it's completely optional). This is due to recent changes in the file rating system by the site.

I'm submitting this here for anyone hoping to to remove the immersion breaking 'battle music'.

Usually, deleting the battle music folder will just cause the Dungeon/Public/Explore Music to restart as combat begins and again when combat ends. So it's an endless cycle of annoyance.

But no longer! Now you can experience the immersion of a dungeon without having war drums kick in every few seconds, or having the music cut-off suddenly! Now you never know when something will strike you from behind!

This is achieved via a bug in Oblivion that allows for the Explore/Dungeon/Public music to play on without interruption when the Battle music has been deleted. This is one bug that I wholeheartedly do not wish to get patched!

NOTE: Once activated this bug will remain activated forever on a character's save file. Any new characters you make will have to go through the process below again. The bug is completely harmless (I've been using it for 3 years over a handful of characters). If you decide you want to hear Battle Music again, you can simply restore the music files and it'll work as it always did... the bug also won't need re-activating if you delete the Battle Music again (providing it's on a character where it was previously activated).

Whew... I hope you understood all that. tl;dr=It's a harmless bug whose effects can be reversed.

How the bug is encouraged:

1. Make sure you have a 'Battle' folder intact in /Oblivion/Data/Music/. This should mean you still hear battle music during fights.

REMEMBER: If you have already deleted the battle music previously, just create the 'Battle' folder manually again in /Oblivion/Data/Music/ and place ANY mp3 in there. Preferably a song to make it stand out that you are being attacked. EDIT: Click here to redownload any Oblivion Music you may have deleted.

2. Find a place with Vampires. This bug seems to be achieved easiest with them. I suggest heading to the 'Imperial Sewers - South East Exit'. Check images for location. You can also try Bloodcrust Cavern south of Skingrad as suggested by theoldwizatd.

3. Kill any mudcrabs nearby the entrance to the sewers. They might ruin your attempt by attacking you later on.

4. Enter the sewers and find a vampire. You may have to go through a few doors to find them. Check the video below if you need help. Once you have found the vampire, make it run after you in combat. You should obviously be hearing the battle music now. Lure the vampire to the sewer exit from which you came. It doesn't matter if it's not right next to the door.

5. Now exit the sewers and save immediately! You should still be hearing the Battle music while saving the game.

NOTE: If it stopped after exiting the sewers, then you probably left the vampire too far behind. You'll have to go back to lure it some more.

6. Quit the game after saving and go to /Oblivion/Data/Music/ and delete or move (your choice) the 'Battle' folder.

REMEMBER: You have to move or delete the FOLDER. Just removing the mp3s within doesn't seem to be enough.

7. Now go back into Oblivion and load your save you just made. You should now be hearing normal explore music while it's loading. The music will RESTART once you have finished loading. The restarting music after you finish loading is a sign that you have succesfully activated the bug.

Go try it out by traveling to a nearby dungeon/city/whatever and attacking a creature. You should no longer experience the 'restarting' of music during combat. The music will also function properly in every way... you hear dungeon music in a dungeon, public music in a city, and epxlore music in the open wilderness. Only battle music has been completely eliminated.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT enter the sewers again for at least 3 ingame days. This is to allow the area to reset. Because if you head back into the sewers, the vampire will still be after you and cancel the bug. You have to wait long enough for it to reset before going back in there for whatever reason.

Here's a video of how it's done. I recommend clicking the link rather than the embedded video for higher quality text.

Removing the actual mp3 music files:

Venture to your default install path of oblivion, which should be "C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\" and find the /Data/Music/ folder.

You now have three options:

1. Back up the "Battle" folder to someplace other on your harrdrive and delete it from the 'Music' folder.
or
2. Simply delete the 'Battle' folder if you have had enough of it and do not wish to hear it again.
or
3. (Recommended) Simply rename the 'Battle' folder to something not recognised by the game.

INSTALLATION: I've included two simple BAT files which should be placed in your /Oblivion/Data/Music/ folder and executed. This will simply rename the Battle music folder for the incredible lazy ones out there who do not wish to type or copy paste it around the place.

UNINSTALLATION: Just run the "ON" file if you used the bat scripts, or put back the music if you chose to do the backup method (or go digging in your recycle bin if you deleted it hastily).

VIDEO:

A video of me being attacked and the dungeon music continuing. (This is a video of one of my older characters)

Additional Info:

Custom Music in my Videos are from here (place in the Dungeon/Public/Explore folder as you see fit):
Project Divinity @ Mikseri.net
Frozen Silence @ Mikseri.net
Celestial Aeon Project @ Mikseri.net

Also, Dungeon Music from is from 'Generic Dungeon Drones'.
Generic Dungeon Drones @ TESNexus Remember: You DO NOT need to replace music to have it work. The files in 'Generic Dungeon Drones' are named after the default dungeon .mp3s that you get with your game. Simply rename them to whatever you want to stop them replacing the original music...
