About this image

Martin, Jauffre, myself and the dog arrived too late and Mehrunes Dagon had already started his rampage. We fought them back as best we could but it was hopeless. Martin then realized he could use the Amulet of Kings to our advantage. I led him to the Temple of the One and to his death. He said goodbye to me briefly and all I could do then was watch. It is a spectacular battle but I could be no part of it. It's strange that at the game's climax the hero of Kvatch just stands there.

Afterwards, the people ask what is was like. What was Martin like? And it's impossible not to feel a sense of loss for Martin who was emperor so very briefly and a friend for just a short time. I miss the friend - after all he never asked for nor wanted obedience from me so I wouldn't dishonour him with that now.

Beautiful description! I felt the same way about the loss of Martin. I actually did like how the hero of Kvatch didn't pay an important role in the final battle at all. For me, it was so unique from most video games and seemed more realistic in that regard. We played an important part in the war, but we're not the only one who can save the world.

It's not wanting to be a hero at the end there - I hate the way in Oblivion that people greet me all the time as the hero of this that or the other... Skyrim lets you sink back into relative obscurity. But I hated standing there hopeless and helpless while Martin died. Like you, I missed him afterwards - his quiet, his self-doubts and above all that fleeting friendship. Do you remember the bit where he says that he has to act because it isn't the gods... the gods didn't save them at Kvatch - he tells you, it was you and now it must be him. It's all very poignant - especially afterwards.

The ending to Throne of Bhaal (Baldur's Gate - original 1&2) is much the same because finally as the battle rages Solar steps in with 'Enough!' and stops it all. Some players were disappointed in that ending but I liked it. There was after all, nothing else to prove.

**Thank you for stopping by! I wish there were more discussions about things like this in the Oblivion Club area... so it's really nice to see other perspectives. It's the other perspectives that make it interesting. ** :-)

      Ah, that makes sense.

I agree with you - I loved that about Throne of Bhaal too :)

Taking part in the beautiful story by enlightening it in different angles makes it liveable for years I guess. New media and so on seems to kill that part. Lord of the Rings is still a hype - others too. The stories have given me a lot.

I agree with you. One of the reasons I enjoy Baldur's gate 1 and 2 is because of the discussion about the nature of good and evil and fate. It is a huge part of BG 1&2. The destiny/fate thing comes into TES too... maybe that's why I enjoy them.
