i just finished up my second attempt i think i figured out what i was doing wrong in the recolor
in gimp under colorize the three setting hue, saturation, and, lightness i seem to have have got a lot closer by not manipulating the saturation at all
Saturation is a bit tricky to get a handle on, best used in very small increments. Instead of colorize which tends to make things look fluorescent, try using "Color Balance" which gives you more direct control of the primary colors. Two other very useful tools are "Levels" and "Components/Channel Mixer". They take some trial and error practice but I can point you in the right direction.
