Starfield ReShade

Introduction

This is a very simple and lightweight ReShade designed to give No Man's Sky a little more of a grown up feel to it, as well as edge its visuals towards that of Starfield's look and feel, for those who want the best of both worlds (pun absolutely intended). My career is within the TV/film/visual effects field, and have been a colourist on several pieces in the past. Starfield's colour has been approached in the same way as you would a filmed piece, so I've approached this ReShade in a similar manner.

How This Works

  • Levels - The first levels effect clips black information by mixing very dark grey areas into blacks, to give an impression of deeper shadows. Usually, this can cause a very dark and contrasted image, however the next effect counters this.
  • LevelsPlus - Once the blacks are clipped to mix darker shades together from the effect above, the black levels are then raised via separate RGB channels to introduce green and blue hues within the absolute blacks. Highlights are also biased towards the warmer side of the colour spectrum, creating a complimentary colour harmony (commonly used in film).
  • Colorfulness - No Man's Sky is known for it's very vibrant look. This tones that down a little, and lets the other visual elements such as the lighting and shadows to take more prominence over the image.
  • MagicBloom - Adds a soft smart bloom over super bright areas, like a bright sky, or the edge of a planet against the black backdrop of space, creating an atmospheric-like effect for planets, and creating lightwrap against brighter backdrops.

The results can be seen below:

Installation

There are plenty of guides online on how to install ReShade, so I won't include them as these steps could change in the future. Upon installing ReShade, simply drop these files into the Binaries folder of your No Man's Sky installation directory to allow use within ReShade in-game.

Recommended Mods

  • Black Space - Removes space colours, turning space into a deep black. Helps with planet integration.
  • ReLight - Corrects in-game lighting and removes random light sources that aren't cast from lights.
  • No Rim Lighting - Creates more accurate lighting by removing unsourced rim lighting on objects.

Notes

The effect can cause quite a large glow on the start screen, but isn't noticeable on any UI while playing. The MagicBloom can also cause a 4-5fps drop.
