I admit I don't have lots of experience with how you scripted this system, but if I could offer a suggestion: Move the log to the center-bottom of the screen, if possible. In my opinion it would feel more natural, although if you want to keep the Fallout 1/2 vibe, perhaps you could put the log in the bottom let and move the Health and Compass above that?
Again, I don't know much about your capabilities here, but it certainly looks cool!
