About this mod

A retexture of vault suits (boomers and utility suits included) across Fallout 3 and New Vegas, based on Adam Adamowicz's concept art.

"Designing, or redesigning the vault suit meant adhering to canon, and updating the textures and tactile feel for the detail we can achieve now in games. I opted for a more durable denim like material, something quintessentially American and, suited to carrying out vault tasks involving heavy machinery and crawling through metal pipes."
- Adam Adamowicz

This was my first attempt at a retexture for armor/clothing. The description has since been updated since I redid all of the textures in this file. I used a mix of manual texturing by-hand (as I solely did with the original version of this mod) and PBR texturing to improve on nearly every version of the vault suit in the game. The only one that's not included are the children's vault suits, since I felt they were largely unnecessary (you're never going to see them again after Fallout 3's intro). These textures are 2048x2048 for diffuse, and a mix of 2048x2048 and 1024x1024 for normals.

For this mod, I decided to focus on adapting Adam Adamowicz's concept art for the vault suits in Fallout 3. While the general look and some small details of the in-game suit are kept intact from the concept art, there are major differences that set them apart - For one, the suits are meant to be made of denim, and look appropriately thick and rugged in the art. They also sport a much larger yellow stripe that sits lower beneath the collar, and the strip of leather and metal pieces on the left chest on the in-game model is instead rendered as a solid metal piece.

In previous versions of this mod, I struggled to correctly render metal (and thus chose to simply reuse the vanilla textures for belts) and normal maps. No more in V3! Belts are properly retextured, and normals are cleaned up. But this mod still has the modder's resource tag, which means if anyone sees this and wants to make improvements on it, or edit it for use in another mod, you're absolutely free to do so.

Note: For New California players, the optional file to replace the base Vault 18 suits' textures with my own is still included, with updated textures.

Credits:
  • Ellise, for their HR Armored Vault Suit mod. I looked at their texture some while working on my own, and I borrowed the design of their piping on the shoes. The file is a modder's resource, but I thought I should credit regardless.
  • ArmorPaint, a really nice open-source PBR texturing software I used alongside manual texturing. Check them out here if you're interested.
  • 3Dassets, a library of royalty free PBR textures I used with ArmorPaint. If you're interested in texturing yourself, then this site will be very helpful. Check out their CC0 (completely royalty free) textures here.

Installation Instructions: Drag 'n' drop the 'textures' folder into your Fallout New Vegas/Data folder. This should work for both Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but since I don't use TTW, I can't test for that specifically. The Vault Security suits may or may not work with TTW - a friend of mine showed me the file paths, for TTW's textures, but they may not have been assigned correctly. Let me know if there are any issues!

Changelog

Stealth Update
  • Added a functioning Fallout 3 version, thanks to FilthyCasual523. This makes it so the Vault 101 Security armor displays the correct number, and replaces the child vault suit meshes with the standard male mesh to cover those suits as well without a retexture.

Version 3
  • Redesigned every single texture previously included, both diffuse and normal maps.
  • Added Vault Security, Vault Lab, Tunnel Snakes, and improved on Boomers outfits.

Version 2.1
  • Updates the normal maps for the Armored Vault 13 suits, fixing misaligned numbers. Thanks to Spiffyskytrooper for pointing out the issue.

Version 2
  • Added Armored Vault Suits (101 in Fallout 3, and 13 in New Vegas), with edited textures to show wear and tear.
  • Slightly updated textures for the Vault Utility Suits, which borrow from the wear and tear of the Armored suits.
  • An optional file has been added which replaces the Vault 18 suits in Fallout: New California with my own textures. Thanks to Thaiauxn for giving me permission to do so. This only replaces the basic suit, so I may have missed some other vault suit variations in the mod. Let me know if there are any issues.
