RADIO FREE WASTELANDS

Have you ever wanted to wander through the Capitol Wasteland or Mojave Desert listening to a radio station with all 63 songs heard in Galaxy News Radio, Radio New Vegas, and even Diamond City Radio? Well, look no further, because do I have a mod for you! Radio Free Wastelands provides a single radio station that will play a randomized playlist of all the songs from all of your favorite stations, all in one game.

LEGALESE

Now, some of you may be thinking, "But admiral0912, the songs from Diamond City Radio are copyrighted, how can you put them in Fallout New Vegas?" Well, my acutely inquisitive reader, there is nothing illegal going on here! My mod doesn't include any audio files, and is actually under 100 kilobytes. 38 of the songs are already found within your TTW installation, but for the other 25, well, if you want them, you will need to do just a little bit of assembly.

For the unaware, the only music that can be uploaded to Nexus Mods as part of a mod, has to either be owned/licensed properly by the mod author, or it has to come from the public domain. Where audio recordings after 1926 are not a part of the public domain, and I do not have the money to properly license any extra music, I decided that using audio that users may already have obtained through legal methods would be the best course of action. Mods with copyrighted music can be subject to takedown requests, and are also against the terms of using Nexus Mods for file submission.

BUT, DON'T TURN OFF THIS STATION JUST YET

Fortunately, I've got some pretty straightforward steps for you, that shouldn't take too long. The conversion of the audio files may take at most 30 minutes depending on your familiarity with the software required, even shorter for those who are technically inclined.

All-in-all, the extracted audio files will take up around 250MBs when the installation is complete. The audio files extracted from Fallout 4 are in stereo, so when we convert them to mono it basically cuts the file-size in half. Once the installation is complete and you've tested the mod, feel free to delete the unmodified files.

NO TIME? NO PROBLEM

There is also a version that only includes the TTW integration, and doesn't require any file conversion. This can be used alongside the main plugin. The full radio name is "Radio Free Wastelands" while the TTW only variant is under "Radio Free Wastelands TTW".

STAY TUNED

Planned updates include: adding songs from Mojave Music Radio, Black Mountain Radio, and any other unique songs I may have missed to both plugins, as well as attempting to normalize the audio between tracks, as some songs are louder than others (this may not be possible, as the adjusting the audio would have to be done at the encoding level from what I've found).

If possible, I may create a separate mod or plugin that combines the songs into GNR and RNV respectively and naturally. This will take a bit of testing, as injecting anything into the main radios might be tricky (hell, even just using songs from the main radios is tricky. Adding the FO4 songs was actually easier to do).

INSTALLATION

• Either install the main mod with MO2/mod manager of choice, or extract to \Fallout New Vegas\Data

• For new and returning TTW users, make sure you've followed The Best of Times and/or Wasteland Survival Guide to ensure proper setup. (If you are using the TTW Only plugin, you do not need to follow the steps below).

Audio Conversion Steps:

• Extract XWM Converter to its own folder

• Use BAE to extract Fallout4 - Sounds.ba2 to a folder outside of your TTW installation

• Move all of the tracks found in \Fallout4 - Sounds\Sound\FX\MUS\Radio\DiamondCity to where you extracted the XWM Converter. Delete the rest of the files extracted through BAE, you will not need them.

• Run "convert-to-wav.bat" and let it process. You'll see an output folder called "wav"

• Next, go to https://goldwave.com/editor/, or use any other audio conversion tool of your choice (the following instructions are for GoldWave Infinity, but the audio settings can be chosen in other programs)

• Import the first song, then click "Menu", "File", "Save As":

- Don't make any changes to the file names, as the game is expecting the same names that were exported from the BSA

*For example, when extracted the first file listed will be "MUS_Radio_Diamond_BettyHutton_HesADemon.xwm". The only thing that will change is the file extension, from .xwm to .wav

- Click the gear icon on the right side of the "Wave/.wav" field, and make sure you select "PCM signed 16 bit, mono". Any other setting will most likely break the compatibility

* To save yourself some time click "Menu", "Settings", "File Formats", and make sure the file type is set to "Wave/.wav", and the Filter Attributes set to "PCM signed 16 bit, mono". Then, at the bottom, make sure to enable both "Use this format for all commands" and "Use this format exclusively", otherwise you may need to reset your settings each save.

• If it asks you to replace the existing file, click yes. It will then ask you if you'd like to update the sound window with the new format. Click yes, and you should see the previous two waveforms visible merge into one large waveform

• When you're done with the file, click "Export"

Repeat this process for all 25 songs from Fallout 4. The rest of the songs used will come from the base games

• When you have completed the conversion process, create the following folder structure: "\Data\Sound\songs\radiofreewastelands". Place all of the converted audio files into the "radiofreewastelands" folder

• Create a compressed archive (.7z, .zip, etc.), rename the archive to "Radio Free Wastelands Audio" and install with your mod manager of choice

COMPATIBILITY

This mod was made specifically for Tale of Two Wastelands 3.3.1. It will not be compatible with any other Fallout New Vegas installations.

The plugin with Diamond City Radio songs requires the converted audio from FO4, converted exactly as the instructions lay out. The TTW Only plugin should be compatible with any TTW 3.3.1 installation, as no records from either game or their DLCs are modified. Only the audio files from RNV and GNR are referenced, so as long as those are not modified there shouldn't be any issues.
