Good news, everyone! The no sound issue in the benny returns version is fixed! Please uninstall the old one and download the new one. Follow instructions in the Readme provided for you to get it working right as rain

    Hey! Listen!

This mod is very simple. Makes simple changes. But alas, I am also simple. I am human and make mistakes! I even fixed one this morning! So please let me know if this somehow doesn't work or breaks the quest-line (or doesn't complete an objective) or whatever. It should be fine, it looks fine, it runs fine for me, but I am insecure and demand others to test my mod for me! Haha! Take that! No such thing as a free lunch!

Really though, I would greatly appreciate any feedback on how this mod functions (or doesn't function... oh I hope that doesn't happen)

I'll have to assume that the mod is no longer receiving updates, especially considering the amount of positive comments on here. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get this mod to work- the Benny Returns version that I tried anyway. I *did* follow the instructions as listed both in the description and the readme in the rar itself, no dice. It's probably an isolated incident since others were able to get it working, so I'm leaving this for anyone else who faces the same issue: bring up the console (` button), select benny, type out prid xxx (the number that shows up next to his name) and enter. When you're ready to leave the Fort, disable Benny. Once you're away, use the prid xxx command to have him selected, enable him and again and use 'moveto player' to tp him to your location. Free him as you would normally, and you're done. He'll show back up eventually.

I have to say I love this mod. I'm so glad the Ben-man returns!

But I'm still having an issue with the sound... I've downloaded and installed the most recent version of this mod as noted in other comments, and have disabled the 'Benny Returns' prior to it as per the instructions. But still, the poor Ben-man is mute :( I'll try redownloading it and giving it another whirl, but are there any other things I could try? Thanks :D

Yeah, I tried reinstalling the new one but it hasn't resolved. I wonder if it's having trouble with some of my other mods? Also, when I freed him it didn't give me the option to give him a stealth boy, it just let me untie him and the Legion didn't aggro - I wonder if I try some of the other versions out.

It's possible it might conflict with other Benny-altering mods like FCO (which I don't use so I have no clue as to compatibility)... And you only have the option in game to give the stealth boy before going thru the bunker, if I recall correctly.

The original no sound issue was due to me naming the esp differently. For the original benny returns mod, in your data folder there should be Sound/Voice/BennyReturns.esp/MaleUniqueBenny. That's where Benny's voice lines for Benny Returns are. If that folder is empty then that's why there is no sound. Otherwise, it must be my mod not playing friendly with some other mod. My original esp didn't match the title of the benny returns sound folder hence it didn't use the voice lines. I had it working after I renamed it, though.

Regardless, I'll make sure and retest the mod tonight and re-download it from here to make sure it's working. I'll edit this when I know more.

Edit: Re-downloaded and re-installed both mods, and it still works as intended for me. I don't mean this in a condescending way, but did you install Benny Returns properly? I didn't the first time I used it. I only downloaded the update file and not the main file, which is the one with all the voice lines and such. Otherwise, it could be that my mod isn't playing well with another mod. If you let me know your load order I can try to guesstimate which mod may be causing trouble. Sorry I couldn't replicate the issue!

Edit edit: Erm, this may seem like a silly thing to say, but you don't need to "disable" the Benny Returns mod as in like disabling the whole thing (uncheck the .esp yes, but move files out of data folder big NO). Otherwise my mod can't use the sound files and such as found in that mod. Just let this mod's .esp overwrite the other one, that's all. Leave Benny Returns installed, but have my .esp checked instead of that other one if that makes sense. It's as simple as install benny returns, then install this mod and hit 'yes to all' or whatever. I still use NMM and  not vortex... ehehe.

Future compatibility with "Benny Returns" by geekminxen? Yes, please.

For the moment, I will enthusiastically endorse this mod. It's about time we had an alternative to slaughtering the whole Fort. Not that Caesar and his goons don't richly deserve such a fate, but having choices, realistic choices, is always good.

    Thanks for your efforts.

Ok, it seems to work, at least in the simplest and straightest route for a female Courier (get to the Strip after the Boulder City showdown, ignore Mr. House and head straight to the Tops, blackwidow Benny sparing him, get to to the Fort after Caesar's invitation, free Benny before activating the securitrons, meet with him at Outpost 188).

The stealth boy plus bobby pin option worked, and the Legion didn't attack me. Benny showed up at the Outpost 188 after like 4-5 reloads and waiting sessions, but that is a well known issue with Benny Returns. I'm happy to report that this time the sound just worked in a non-Todd-fashion. Ah, as usual there is the infamous companion perk glitch which freezes the game after the Ben-man joins, another bug geekminxen never managed to squish despite her valiant efforts. Actually,  it's kind of random, and on the second try Benny joined my merry band of misfits without issues; however, should the glitch occur, players are well advised to access the console and type 'closeallmenus' without the two ', which seems to fix the bug. Probably a more complete  test would require all possible scenarios (visiting first House, talking to Swank in the Tops, activating the Securitrons in the bunker before freeing Benny et cetera), including a male Courier Six who decides to spare Benny. I will see what I can do, at least for a female Courier, since these days I have no time to start a game anew.

Lastly, the mod was tested on a fairly large load order (172 plugins), built on the Viva New Vegas Guide by Qolore7 and manually patched with FNVEdit when necessary. This mod was at the bottom of the load order and just two compatibility patches were made for the YUP patch and the Weightlight Strip Overhaul (https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/65665). If you are interested, I can provide the load order.

So, kudos: it seems we have the best of two worlds; Benny as a companion and a somewhat reasonable alternative to singlehandedly slaughtering the whole fort and breaking the Legion storyline (for those who care about it: not me…). Thanks again.

So, I'm using the Benny Returns version along with Benny Returns. I'm not sure if it's my load order or if I'm doing something wrong here, but I ended up using commands to make the whole Legion chill because they kept going aggro whenever I tried to save Benny. That worked for a bit... 'til I returned to the Fort and they immediately went aggro again. I've tried killing him and summoning him later, and for some reason that makes them all aggro, too. I'll admit I did a lot of messing around when the mod didn't work for me originally, but now I'm thinking I must have just installed it wrong or something. How did you get it to work? When you use it, do you use it with Benny Returns? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Well, for starters, I would uninstall the benny returns mod and this mod and then re-install as such:
      1. Install benny returns first as. No special way to install it, just however it says to on the mod page.
      2. Then install the benny returns version of this mod.
      3. Then, using a mod manager of your choice, deactivate Benny Returns.esp and make sure if it's not to activate my .esp instead (something like NoMadNoBork_BennyReturns). You can't have both active at once, it won't work.

Secondly, the benny returns version of my mod only works under these circumstances:
      1. Benny is freed with a stealth boy and bobby pin
      2. Benny is freed after going through the underground bunker and caesar gives you permission to "deal with him."
Any other choice will aggro the legion. I made it that way on purpose to be at least a little more "lore friendly".

Meantime I'll fire up the game and see if I can't replicate this. Let me know how it goes after following these steps :)

IT WORKED!! I didn't get the option to give him the stealth boy and bobby pin; I just untied him and no one went hostile. The only issue is now Benny is unvoiced? He doesn't say any of his lines, even after re-enabling the Benny Returns esp. Any idea why this happened? Thank you sm for your help btw I really appreciate it!

Yes! Indeed the sound was broken! Because I was a fool! Sound should be working now in the latest version. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please uninstall the old version and install my new version as per instructions in the file's Readme. Also, the stealth boy dialogue only occurs if you free benny before going thru the underground weather bunker :)

The .esp I originally uploaded had a different name than just BennyReturns.esp, which is why the sound was broken. Now that I've fixed that, it runs fine. I originally changed the name because I thought it'd be confusing having two BennyReturns esps but I ended up shooting myself in the foot, hahaha.

Erm, oh yeah, and I think you need to load a save before you've freed benny or he might... disappear. At least that's what happened to me when I briefly tested it. Your milage may vary

Thanks for the update! I really appreciate everything you're doing.

Unfortunately, when I installed the new version, while it DID restore Benny's voice, it trapped me in the quest where I had to deal with Benny even after I freed him. I will admit I have been messing around with this mod and Benny Returns; enabling, disabling, reinstalling, all that on numerous hard saves. Odds are this could work perfectly on a clean game and mine's just messed up lol.

I ended up reinstalling your old Benny Returns version. While Benny is mute, at least it for sure works without trapping me in a quest or making everyone go hostile. I admire your dedication to improve this mod though, and I look forward to trying any other updates anyway, and any other mods you happen to make! Thank you so much, and godspeed.

Shoot, really? Even after talking to Caesar? I might have forgotten that part

Edit: nope, I didn't forget to add that part to the mod (phew).

After you free benny and go through the bunker, what happens with caesar? What does he say? Please tallk to him 3x for me after freeing benny and going thru the bunker (doesn't have to be in that order) and let me know.

Basically, get to the "deal with benny" section and then have a chat with caesar. Even if benny is long gone by then.

Sorry for the text wall! I just want to be thorough.

Having an issue with no sound. I am running it with FCO and the original mod. I followed the steps posted in
the comments in order to make sure Benny looks like his FCO version and
that worked (had to copy it to both this mod and the original companion mod). I tried putting the voice files from the original in my Data folder and that didn't
work either. Can anyone give me a hand with this? I am also using MO2 if that makes a difference but did copy the voice files manually to the Data folder

Rats, I don't use that mod so I'm not sure what's gone wrong in the process. If you disable this mod does the sound work? I didn't edit any voices or anything when I made it. I added a silent dialogue line, but only to Caesar. I wonder if that's it?

Well, I feel like a total tool, but it was a problem with the name of my mod that caused this no sound issue. I'm terribly sorry for not getting around to checking it sooner! Delete your old version and install the new one I uploaded. Overwrite the original bennyreturns.esp from the other mod and you should be golden. But you'll have to load a save from before you free benny, I think. Let me know, lol. My baby takes up all my testing time now so I'm recruiting you :p

This is awesome! I've been grappling with the issue of how to keep Benny as a companion in a lore-friendly way after he gets captured by the Legion for a while now, and you provided exactly that! Would it be cool if I included a version of your file in my mod compilation here? I'd give you credit for the idea, of course.

In the words of Boone, "Fine by me." But he won't be available as a companion proper until I fine-tune and upload the Benny Returns compatible .esp. Hopefully within the next 7 days.

No biggie, I think it's just a matter of rigging up the dialogue to disable FortBenny and then enable the Benny Returns version once he escapes. Could probably do it myself tbh.

I've got it done now, I just need to test it sometime. It's the same premise as the original mod, really. Comment out the lines in the dialogue that cause the Legion to go hostile when you free Benny, then make it so that Caesar doesn't keep repeating himself like "we have nothing to discuss until you've dealt with Benny." The Benny Returns mod should take care of the rest. In theory :)

Eh, but they don't know that the Courier was the one who gave Benny what he needed to escape. The Legion should only become hostile if they see the PC releasing Benny. Besides, Caesar already forgives you for doing much worse, so the mere suspicion that you released a guy wouldn't be enough to make you persona non grata, especially considering the plans Caesar still has for you at that point.

Hey thank you, I've been waiting a LONG time for this. Also if it works reliably, I'd like to make a TTW version for Rory in Paradise Falls. I have to figure out how dialogue works so that's a while off, and then a Fo3 version for any remaining FO3 players (I'm still one).

My request is that it works for the crucifixion option because I figure that that's the one option where Benny isn't going to be watched when you spring him. ANy other option, Caesar is watching your every move.

    But seriously, thank you!

I'd love to be able to do that. I'll try and look into it, but my time and skill are teeny tiny itty bitty :_( I want to make a video sometime detailing how I made this to help out people that would like to but that's a long way off, time-wise.

I have FO3 and love it to bits, maybe someday when muh kid (9 month old) gives me time I can look into how Rory works.

If modding is like surgery, then I am but a mere football coach with a rock and a pencil ;P
