Description

I was looking for mods that converted irradiated food to its regular form, handled the bottling of water, and gave empty containers back from food, drink, and chems. I was dissatisfied with what I found as most of these mods were either old, buggy, and/or edited forms. That's why I made this from the ground up as a scripted replacement for them, and as of version 1.3 it can be easily patched to use items from other mods (see the instructions below).

Instructions

This mod is made up of a few components and I'll go over them in turn...

Bottling Water

You can now bottle water from any source. The usual method is applied—crouch to fill 'em. If you hold shift whilst you're filling, you fill only one bottle instead of all of your bottles. This system uses only empty glass bottles that you recieve from drinking purified water for two reasons a.) I didn't like the immersion hit of bottles constantly changing their shape, and b.) it's easy enough to unbalance hardcore as it is.

Empties

Whenever you consume an ingestible (food, drinks, chems), you'll get an appropriate empty back. Well, if there's one available in the game. Currently it supports...

Water (All 3) -> Empty Water Bottle
Nuka-Cola & Quartz & Victory & Ice-Cold -> Empty Nuka-Cola Bottle
Sunset Sarsparilla -> Empty Sunset Sarsparilla Bottle
Whiskey & Dixon's & Irradiated -> Empty Whiskey Bottle
Caravan's Lunch -> Lunchbox
Pork 'N' Beans & Irradiated -> Tin Can
Jet & Dixon's -> Empty Jet Inhaler
Scotch & Dixon's & Irradiated -> Empty Scotch Bottle
Stimpak -> Syringe
Super Stimpak -> Syringe & Leather Belt
Trailmix -> Lunchbox

The idea here is that if it looks like you'd get something, you will. Stimpaks have a syringe, so you pull the syringe out and keep it when you're done; Pork 'N' Beans is in a tin can, you tear off the label and keep the can for its metal; Et cetera. If you have any ideas for something that should get an empty, let me know in the comments.

Portable Purifier

Whenever you pick this item up, it'll scrub the rads from any form of food or drink in your inventory. If you have it in your inventory, it'll scrub the rads from irradiated food and drink as you pick them up. It notifies you of everything it's doing so you'll always be appraised. Here's what it works with...

Water (Dirty) -> Water (Purified)
Water (Irradiated) -> Water (Purified)
Irradiated Sunset Sarsparilla -> Sunset Sarsparilla
Irradiated Beer -> Beer
Irradiated Scotch -> Scotch
Irradiated Whiskey -> Whiskey
Irradiated Cram -> Cram
Irradiated Crunchy Mutfruit -> Crunchy Mutfruit
Irradiated Dandy Boy Apples -> Dandy Boy Apples
Irradiated Fancy Lads Snack Cakes -> Fancy Lads Snack Cakes
Irradiated Instamash -> Instamash
Irradiated Mac & Cheese -> Mac & Cheese
Irradiated Mutfruit -> Mutfruit
Irradiated Banana Yucca -> Banana Yucca
Irradiated Barrel Cactus -> Barrel Cactus
Irradiated Gecko Meat -> Gecko Meat
Irradiated Pork 'N' Beans -> Pork 'N' Beans
Irradiated Potato -> Potato
Irradiated Potato Crisps -> Potato Crisps
Irradiated Salisbury STeak -> Salisbury Steak
Irradiated Sugar Bombs - > Sugar Bombs
Irradiated Yum-Yum Deviled Eggs -> Yum-Yum Deviled Eggs

The process will happen automatically. You don't need to use or do anything, just having the portable purifier in your inventory will let it do its job!

I am the Milkman!

With update 1.6 arrives milk! Milk is distributed across the wastes in the same places you might find drinks or water. You can milk brahmin now, too! You'll need a pot to contain the effluvience and some empties, and with one milking you can get up to ten bottles. Don't be too eager! The brahmin can get a little anxious if you're too handsy with them, so give them a chance to cool off after a milking. If something goes very wrong in the transaction between you and brahmin for your desired dairy treat... Well, they might get a little upset! Your agility, charisma, and luck will all factor into ensuring nothing goes wrong while you're milking them brahmin. Also, if you hold shift while milking you can get 1 bottle at a time instead of the max amount your milk bucket (pot) otherwise gives you, which is 10.

Milk is a bit like purified water—only a bit better and a bit worse. If you drink a whole lot of milk, there's a chellenge involved which you may have a thing or two to say about, though it is very helpful nonetheless! Enjoy your nutricious, dleicious brahmin product!

Thirteen Canteens

Thirteen unique canteens have been added to the wastes. You can find these strewn around in places trafficked by travellers. They're all from the fabled vault, so you won't find them in dungeons or other vaults as that wouldn't really make much sense! These have been scavenged by various parties and brought with them to Vegas.

They function similarly to water bottles, but they weigh a little less and restore a little more hydration. Hold alt to fill just one at a water source, or fill them the usual way with your bottles! There's also a challenge involved in finding all 13 that'll net you a nifty reward.

Companions Have Empties Too

If your companion is within a certain distance of you, they should hand you their empties, otherwise they'll keep their empties in their own inventory. Your companions should be able to use the food purifier, too.

Recipes Companion

In the downloads section, you'll find a "Companion" file. This has recipe edits which bring the recipes in the base game and Honest Hearts DLC (the only ones to have relevant content) in line with what you'd expect from FAE. So if something takes a full Nuka-Cola bottle but doesn't use the bottle itself (just the soda), you'll get an empty Nuka-Cola bottle back.

The reason this isn't a part of the main file is that the main file should be 100 per cent compatible with everything as it's 100 per cent scripted with no form edits. These recipe edits are form edits, so they could result in incompatibilities. This way, I leave it upt to the player to decide. If they check out the Companion file and have no incompatibilities? Great! If they don't? They can still continue to use base FAE without issue.

Hints

Where might you find a piece of space-age technology like this purifier? Well, there's a hint in that question right there. Where indeed? You shouldn't have too much trouble. I'll tell you in the comments if you need direct guidance.

Why isn't this mod working for me?

I think this might be because on a mod-heavy loadout a lot of scripts run on the title screen. If you jump the gun and hit continue as quickly as possible—especially if you're using LStewieAl's Tweaks to remove the wait times—the scripts won't load because you're no longer in that menu mode. I think this is why Obsisdian/Bethesda had that delay in the first place, to handle things that needed to be done on the title screen. However, if you have a mod heavy loadout this can take even longer than the time they alotted depending on various factors. If you're having trouble with FAE or other, similar, scripted mods? Try waiting a little longer at the title screen.

Alternatives

I, of course, hope you love FAE. I mean, it's nice when you find what you want. That's why I share things. I made this because it's what I wanted. If, however, you dislike FAE and you're looking for an equally scripted alternative? I recommend Eddorsul's Bottle Rinse Repeat. It has different design sensitibilities to FAE that might align more with what you'd want.
