About this mod

Adds an aid item called the Roughin' It! Portable Hotplate which can be bought or crafted. Functions similarly to the Roughin' It! Bedroll Kit from Lonesome Road, but allows cooking/campfire crafting instead of sleeping. Does NOT require Lonesome Road to use. Lonesome Road and TTW versions available.

Permissions and credits
CAUTION: Use only ONE version of the Main File

  • If you DO NOT own Lonesome Road, ONLY use the Fallout: New Vegas version.
  • If you DO own Lonesome Road, you can use the Fallout: New Vegas version (if you do not want to be able to buy the bedroll kit from hotplate vendors) OR the Lonesome Road version (if you want to be able to buy the bedroll kit from hotplate vendors)
  • If you are playing Tale of Two Wastelands, You can technically use any version, but only the TTW version adds the items for sale to vendors in the Capital Wasteland.

Summary

The Lonesome Road DLC for Fallout: New Vegas added a re-usable consumable item called the Roughin' It! bedroll kit. The bedroll allows you to sleep, and enjoy all the benefits and healing that a bed provides. This mod adds a companion item that functions very similarly to the Roughin' It bedroll kit - except this allows you to cook or craft as if you were at a campfire. Together, the items can be used to create an extremely lightweight and integrated set of gear for camping - the perfect companion for wanderers who spend a lot of time out in the field.

Using the Hotplate

The Hotplate behaves in a similar fashion to the bedroll - In both cases, open the "Aid" section of your Pipboy Inventory and use the item. You will be prompted to close the pipboy. A few seconds after closing the pipboy, the relevant menu will appear (sleep menu for the bedroll kit, cook menu for the hotplate). After use, the item will remain in your inventory, ready to be used again. There is one other difference between the behaviour of the hotplate and the bedroll kit - You cannot use the bedroll if you are inside a building, you must be outside to use it. The hotplate does not share this limitation - you can cook in any location you wish, whether inside or out.

Getting the Hotplate

You can either buy the hotplate, or you can craft it. Due to the usefulness of the item, and to try to keep early game balance in check, the price of the hotplate and the skill requirements to craft the hotplate are set to be very high - to craft, you need a skill level of 90 in repair AND the jury rigging perk. You can then craft a portable hotplate from a hotplate (the misc item that you can find in the base game), a fission battery and two pieces of scrap electronics.

Depending on which version of the mod you use, you can buy the hotplate from the following vendors:

New Vegas/ Lonesome Road Version

  • Goodsprings (Chet)
  • Novac (Cliff)

Tale of Two Wastelands Version

In the Mojave Wasteland

  • Goodsprings (Chet)
  • Novac (Cliff)

In the Capital Wasteland

  • Megaton (Moira)
  • Rivet City (Seagrave)
  • Underworld (Tulip)
  • Tenpenny Towers (Lydia)

Buying the Hotplate/Bedroll

In addition, for the Tale of Two Wastelands and Lonesome Road version, you will also be able to buy the Roughin' It Bedroll Kit from the same merchants listed above. This allows you to have a complete set of camping gear, albeit at a high price. I understand that the makers of the kit didn't want to trivialize survival mode by giving easy access to potent abilities such as sleeping or cooking anywhere, but it doesn't really make sense to me that there is virtually NO ability to do that, especially in a society geared towards survival at all costs. Thus, a compromise - you can have those abilities, but at a high price in either caps, or skill points.

Optional File - Bedroll Tweaks

If you are using the Lonesome Road DLC, or Tale of Two Wastelands, you can use the optional file alongside ONE of the main files to make the following changes to Lonesome Road's Roughin' It Portable Bedroll Kit:

  • Bedroll Kit weight reduced to 8 from 15
  • Bedroll Kit can now be used anywhere - interiors or outside, doesn't matter.

Installation - With Mod Manager (Recommended)
