This simple mod slightly modifies the Dead Money quest "Put the Beast Down" to drastically increase the usefulness of the Medicine skill, and make Speech proportionately less overpowered.

++Introduction++

Have you ever gotten the sense that the Speech skill in New Vegas is way, way overpowered, to the extent that a character who doesn't specialize in smooth-talking people is consigned to some REALLY bad endings, especially in the DLC?

Did it seem kind of odd to you that the key to talking down Dog/God, who suffers from what appears to be severe DID, was not a thorough understanding of how that mental illness is treated, but simply convincing him to be nice with a silver tongue? (Speaking from first- and second-hand experience, this is NOT how mental illness works.) It sure seemed odd to me when I was playing through Dead Money for the third time last evening!

There are more changes on the way but this is the one I considered the most important when I made this mod!

++Specific changes++

This simple mod currently makes makes a few changes to dialogue in the game.

The main changes are to Dog's dialogue in the Cantina Madrid kitchen encounter during the quest "Put the Beast Down" at the very end of the Dead Money DLC. In the vanilla game, aside from killing him, there are two ways to deal with Dog/God and resolve the quest: with a 75 Speech check, you can cause one personality to take over the other; or with a further 85 Speech check, you can merge his personalities to create a coherent new one. My main changes are: to convince either Dog or God to "subdue" the other personality and take over, you'll need a Medicine skill of 80 70 60; and to cause his personalities to merge together requires a Medicine skill of 99 85 75. The initial Speech 50 check to calm Dog down is now Speech 40.

Additionally, I altered some lines from Dazzle, a sex worker in Gomorrah. She will now respond to the Cherchez La Femme perk instead of the Black Widow perk!

++Installation++

Since this mod consists of only a .esp plugin, put it in your Fallout New Vegas/Data folder and then activate it in "Data Files" in the launcher, or—preferably—install it with Mod Organizer 2. No requirements except the base Fallout: New Vegas game and Dead Money, of course.

++Permissions++

Do what you want. Put it in your modpack, make more edits to other dialogue items in the GECK, or whatever else strikes your fancy. In any case, however, please credit me for my part!

++Future plans++

I would like to add an alternative to the Speech check at the end of Joshua Graham's route in Honest Hearts. All that is well above my knowledge of the GECK, though, so no guarantees on when it will come out.
