Abstract:
Bashar's Better Magazines rebalances magazines to function as a strategic resource, providing the player with limited flexibility in speccing their character for specific needs based on predicted circumstances.  The duration of magazine effects has been raised to 48 minutes, the equivalent of one 24 hour day in game; however, activation will cancel the effects of any previous magazines so that only one is operating at a time. 

For example, before entering a town or settlement, the player may wish to activate Meeting People or Salesman Weekly to raise speech or barter scores respectively.  Or perhaps Locksmith's Reader or Programmer's Digest might be utilized to help bypass locks or terminals when entering a dungeon.  Or before entering a difficult fight, the player may wish to read a weapon related magazine.  The player can now use these resources with the confidence that their bonus will last for as long it takes to get the job done right.


Skill Point Adjustment:
The stat benefit from magazines has also been changed based on my experience of their utility in the game.  Infiltration focused magazines (Lockpick, Science) have had their bonus reduced, since these have a big impact in determining the player's accessibility to doors, containers, and terminals.  Combat/weapon related magazines (Energy Weapons, Explosives, Guns, Melee, Unarmed), True Police Stories (Critical), and La Fantoma (Stealth) have have their bonuses increased so that their impact on player effectiveness is more noticeable.  Otherwise non-combat magazines (Barter, Medicine, Repair, Speech, Survival) have been left unchanged.

Lockpick, Science: +8 (+15 w/ Comprehension perk)
Barter, Medicine, Repair, Speech, Survival: +10 (+20)
Energy Weapons, Explosives, Guns, Melee Weapons, Unarmed: +12 (+25)
True Police Stories: +6 critical chance modifier (+12)


Magazine Related Perks:
The Comprehension perk functions normally, increasing the effectiveness of magazines.  The Retention perk, though, no longer increases the duration of effects but instead allows the players to have two magazines active at a time.  If the player then attempts to activate a third magazine, the effect of the older one is cancelled out first.  Retention also gives the player a chance to retain a magazine on use.  The PC's Intelligence and Luck scores improve this chance but the average return is one magazine per every four or five consumed.

Note that this mod does not make any changes to the vanilla perks so that it would not conflict with any other mods that may be active.  This means that you will still see the vanilla description on the level-up menu, even though this mod is operating as advertised.


Installation and Compatibility:

To install, simply extract Bash_Magazine.esp to your /Data/ folder and apply to your load order.  Note that NVSE is required for this mod to function.

This mod edits the 14 vanilla magazine objects.  Therefore it should be placed below any other mods that alter these objects in your load order.
