It's not that it's impossible, but rather that it causes strange bugs. One that I noticed immediately is that after force-closing dialogue, you can no longer hear most sound effects on your character. And there's probably more, especially quest-breaking ones.
I got an NVSE version popup, but I've got the latest stable version (5.0b2). All other NVSE plugins work without issue. Is this mod looking for the beta version?
For all that, the mod seems to work as described, though I wasn't able to properly map the ESC key. It works fine to toggle the main menu, but if I use it to exit anything else, it pulls up the main menu.
ETA - OK. I tried the beta, and I no longer get the version popup. It doesn't look like this mod is intended to work with the main menu, because even the X key doesn't work there. But the TAB key works great and still controls the Pip-Boy without issue.
I'm glad that you were able to solve these issues.
You are right, it didn't occur to me to check using Esc key for this, and I doubt I'd be able to override it opening the pause menu. I didn't think to make it close the pause menu either (only the ones listed in the description). Thankfully, most other keys and menus should work just fine (barring some specific situations where the chosen key may collide with an existing hotkey in some specific menus).
I'm surprised that you received a notification about NVSE version, because I don't remember putting it in the mod, nor do I see anything in the scripts that would do that. Do you remember what it said?
Is there any way I could modify this to create a wait/rest hotkey? I want to basically use the controller buttons for something else but still be able to wait by holding down a button for a couple seconds like the pip light, but new vegas doesn't let controller and keyboard be used at the same time at all.

I'll do some additional testing. ...
Endorsed!

Always wanted to make something like this myself for all menus, but never had time to dig deep into it.
