Update: Added 2 optional files to the page
* QuickHacking-NV-FullXP - retains the vanilla XP rewards for hacking terminals while reducing the number of possible choices to just 1
* QuickHacking-NV-Optional-QuickRetry - reduces the "cool down" time between hacking retries on terminals from 10 seconds to 1 second.

Installation for the optional files detailed in updated Installation section below. ONLY USE ONE VERSION OF THE NORMAL QUICK HACKING - do not attempt to use both QuickHacking-NV and QuickHacking-NV-FullXP together, it is not needed. Both files contain the same hack changes with just the XP rewards being different.

You can use the QuickHacking-NV-Optional-QuickRetry along with one of the other 2 files though - it changes a completely separate variable.

Short Description:
A simple mod which makes hacking easier by showing one word choice - this mod also reduces XP gain for the hack attempts

Detailed Description:

One of the things that I really don't care for in both Fallout 3 and New Vegas is the Hacking mini game. I get frustrated trying to puzzle it out and, as I play games to relieve stress, tended to just ignore them. I started using a mod for Fallout 3 that made a simple change to hacking so I decided I would mess around with NV Geck to see if I could do the same.

All I really did was change the minimum and maximum possible words in a hackable terminal to 1. This means you will only ever see the correct answer. You still need the proper science stat level in order to access the various terminal lock levels.

The mod I used in FO3, and many of the quick hack mods here for NV, tend to leave the XP reward for hacking alone - which makes it much more of a cheat. I have tweaked the XP rewards downwards to reflect that not much work is going into it [I didn't remove them all together because you do have to sacrifice some stats to increasea your Science]. Here is an XP reward comparison (vanilla to mod):

Lock Level: XP Vanilla => XP Mod
==============================
Very Easy: 20 => 5
Easy: 30 => 10
Average: 40 => 15
Hard: 50 => 20
Very Hard: 60 => 25

Installation Instructions:

* Extract the archive [QuickHackingNV.zip or Optional-QuickHacking-NV-FullXP.zip] with your preferred extraction program.
* Place the extracted ESP file [QuickHacking-NV.exp or QuickHacking-NV-FullXP.esp] into your Fallout New Vegas/Data folder and then enable the ESP in either the Launcher Data Files menu or via FOMM.

Option File Installation:
Quick Hacking - Quick Retry: Extract the archive as above. Place the file QuickHacking-NV-Optional-QuickRetry.esp into your FNV/Data folder and activate it via FOMM or the Launcher Data Files option.

Load Order Notes - This mod should probably be loaded last or at least very low in your load order. There should be no conflicts with any mod that does not touch on the hacking or XP rewards for hacking.

BOSS Load Order Userlist Additions
Users of BOSS can add the following line(s) to their Data\BOSS\userlist.txt to put this mod into a proper BOSS group for auto sorting. This should help with positioning and keep sorting hassles down to a minimum.

Note: There are different entries for each of the files.

[Update 9/30/2011]QuickHacking-NV.esp is now part of the official BOSS load order list. No need for adding a user list entry :) - I am not sure about the other 2 options however.
QuickHacking-NV-FullXP.esp Addition:

ADD: QuickHacking-NV-FullXP.esp
BOTTOM: Game-Settings and Overrides
APPEND: " Do not use with QuickHacking-NV.esp
APPEND: ? Changes hacking to have one possible word in the list - full XP reward.

QuickHacking-NV-Optional-QuickRetry.esp Addition:

ADD: QuickHacking-NV-Optional-QuickRetry.esp
BOTTOM: Game-Settings and Overrides
APPEND: ? Changes the "cool down" period between hacking attempts from 10 seconds to 1 second

I am putting this up there so others can use it if they want. It is a quick mod to put together and I encourage people to play with GECK to do so, but if you don't want to bother I am providing this.

To answer some questions before they happen:

Yes. I know there are other quick hacking mods - this is mine. I did not "copy" anything from other mods, though I wouldn't be surprised if other people did the same method for editing [open GECK, go to Game Settings menu item, tweak settings] or if others also reduce XP [I haven't seen one that does but I haven't checked every mod in the repository].

No I will not custom adjust the mod to suit every individual user out there. If there is enough call to add a tweak then I may think of it but thats about it.

This mod modifies basic setting variables - it should have no affect on mods that do not touch the hacking mini game. Mods that adjust XP rewards across the boards may conflict with this mod - I would suggest putting whichever gives you the reward level you like lower in the load order.

I am just starting with messing around with GECK and modding and this was my first foray into it. I hopefully will be able to start figuring out more complex ideas, so maybe keep an eye on my contributions :)
