About this mod

Makes the rifle \"This Machine\" more accurate.

NOTE:

It was pointed out to me that the previous version of this mod wasn't entirely clean. It had some changes to lever action rifles and 40mm grenades in it. I removed the old version and replaced it with this cleaner version.

Now the main file no longer does ANYTHING but change This Machine's accuracy.

Disclaimer:
I'm an odd person sometimes, and perhaps a bit obsessed with history. As such it's no surprise this file has grown in several different directions and I talk too much about things that interest me. Maybe it's because I enjoy teaching so much. I just want to share things that I think people may find interesting.

Mod Description:

A very simple mod that gives "This Machine" the same accuracy of a hunting rifle.

Also includes an optional dark texture for "This Machine".

This Machine is my favorite weapon in Fallout New Vegas.

I got tired of repeatedly missing shots that I KNOW I would have made with an M-1 in real life.

It shouldn't be this inaccurate with 100 guns skill. For crimeny's sake, it's a freaking M-1 Garand!

The old guys used to say that with an M-1, if you could see someone, you could hit them.

Despite the rated effective range of 650 yards, people regularly shoot them in competition out to 1000 yards with iron sights.

New Optional File:

There is a new dark texture for "This Machine". The texture was made by thatguy10, maker of TGs Armor Collection for New Vegas.

(The green jacket and blue jean outfit you see Dawn wearing comes from his mod.)

Thank you TG, nice work!

This retexture does not need an esp file. Simply drop it's texture folder into your data folder.

Game Notes:

Musician "Woody Guthrie" had the words, "This Machine Kills Fascists", written on his guitar.

This is likely where the weapon "This Machine" gets it's name.

If you look really close you can see the words, "Well This Machine Kills Commies", carved into the side of this unique rifle.

Historical Notes:

Believe it or not, a lot of M1s really were made in .308. The actual Army designation for the .308 version was the M1E14 and the Navy designation was the Mk 2.

The .308 versions of the M1 were mostly issued to the U.S. Navy as shipboard weapons, and were also often used by ROTC units. They were still being issued in .308 as late as Viet Nam.

The M1 Garand is still used today by some honor guards and drill teams.

You can still purchase surplus M1s from the military, through the Civilian Marksmanship Program

The bullets in an M-1 are held by an en-bloc clip, not a magazine. It's basically a one-piece molded piece of sheet metal that holds the bullets together by pressure. Once one bullet leaves the clip they rattle around and can fall out if not inside the rifle.

It is possible to reload a partially fired en-bloc clip, but not usually done in combat as it takes a little time. It's faster to simply eject a partial clip and load in a new full clip. But that leaves some bullets scattered on the ground.

To eject the partial clip you pulled the bolt back and held it, the pressed the ejection button on the left side.

You would of course, then lock the bolt in place to the rear before inserting the new clip. The drawback to this, is you would end up with a few unfired rounds scattered around the ground.
