Ah yes, Barton Thorn. I remember meeting him much later on in the game during my first FNV playthrough, I was walking back to Goodsprings in order to talk to Doc Mitchell about his origins with Sarah Weintrub & Michael Angelo.
I was wearing wearing Remnants Power Armor from the Deathclaw Sanctuary I had recently cleared out, & was wielding a Holorifle I got from completing Dead Money earlier on in the playthrough.
I found a campfire near one of the Goodsprings water sources, so I decided to cook some of the meat I had looted off of some Fire Geckos I had killed earlier, & It was here at this campsite that I had my first ever interaction with none other than Barton Thorn.
I had never spoke to the guy before, so I just assumed he actually had a girlfriend trapped by geckos up on the ridge. I agreed to clear out the geckos, which I did by easily one-shotting every single under-level gecko there with my holorifle.
After spending a few seconds searching around for his girlfriend, I started to believe that either she escaped already, or the quest was bugged. I was going back the way I came in order to continue towards Doc Mitchell's house.
But before I could do so, Barton Thorn comes to me, & "apologizes" for lying to me, & then tells me that he'll going to kill me. As you can imagine, he died instantly, & he hadn't even pulled out his weapon all the way before I reduced him to a pile of ash.
After that, I went to Doc Mitchell's house to talk to him about his origins regarding Vault 21. But I never forgot how confused I was when I disintegrated Barton Thorn.
Why was there a camp up on the ridge, & why was Barton so interested in it? Who was the mutilated corpse on the ridge, & how did he/she die?
I later discovered cut content regarding Barton Thorn, but it only brought up more questions, rather than solving any of the previous ones I had.
Unfortunately, the devs never answered these questions, so they will forever remain a mystery. Regardless, I really enjoy the game.
