Was down at the mall earlier today, and happened to be next to Best Buy, so took a look at the newer 1920x1080 monitors. Ah well, liked them enough that, contrary to what I said earlier about waiting for my current monitor to die of old age, I went home and ordered one from TigerDirect. So, as long as I'm going to have two monitors, I might as well also switch to a dual-display setup.

Heh, had no idea that trying out your two HD mods was gonna seduce me into buying a new monitor!!!!

    All is well, then! <img class="emoticon" src="https://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/smile.gif" />

I have other mods in the works, as well as the revisions of the dialogue mod, so more's coming.

    Really? Great!

I'm using all three of your released mods. As I said in the comments of your dialogue mod, the new dialogue menu is surprisingly great. I'd love to see what updates you're planning for the dialogue mod! <img class="emoticon" src="https://forums.nexusmods.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/smile.gif" />

You were right. At first, I gotta admit, I couldn't figure out why you were seeing the results you were seeing, mostly chalking it up to looking at them on a 16:09 monitor instead of a 16:10 one (my comments on monitor bitmap graphics scaling still hold true though).

It continued to bug me though, so today I spent some time in PaintShop Pro to find out why. Looking it up at their web site, in the resize component, if you select both changing the aspect ratio and rescaling, PSP is supposed to first change the aspect ratio and only then rescale. Except that isn't how PSP actually worked! Instead the exact opposite was done, rescaling and THEN changing the aspect ratio, introducing distortion in the process. It ended up I had to make it a manual 2 step process in order to get it done right, which made the differences between letting PSP do it automatically and me doing it manually really evident. That'll teach me to automatically believe the docs.

And again you were right, in the end any differences between the pics at 16:09 1920x1080 or at 16:10 1680x1050 were so minute I had to really, really, look hard to even see them.

All in all, a huge waste of time on my part and just bugging you unnecessarily.MEA CULPA!!!

Yeah, as for using your name on the first upload, I use Mediafire so seldom that I forgot their file links are public to everybody. I remembered that on the second upload which is why it had a generic file name.

I was referring to my name in the link in post 17, but since the files are no longer at that link, it doesn't matter.

Resizing the images without actually changing what is in the image (such as by cropping off the sides) is not changing the aspect ratio, since the image is resized to the expected ratio within the game engine. Again, if you just take a screenshot of the menu with my download here, and another with your version, and compare the two, you should see what I mean.

Actually, changing the aspect ratio for the pics in the link I posted yesterday is EXACTLY what I did. I didn't for the first set I put up at Mediafire, but definitely did for the second set. I don't know what you used to check them out, but at my end in either PhotoShop or PaintShop Pro the pics I changed the second time have an aspect ratio of 1.6:1, which _IS_ 16:10 (to be mathematically correct it should be 1.618:1 but the manufacturers for some reason or other rounded the ratio up), 16:09 usually works out to be 1.7778:1.

Did you look at them on a 1680x1050 monitor or on your 1920x1080 monitor? They likely won't look right on your 1920x1080 monitor. On mine, that second set of pix looks perfect, noticeably better then when I forgot about aspect ratio and just scaled them down.

Something I've noticed with many LCD computer monitors is that their internal scaling function frequently doesn't do a good job of downscaling correctly when using a lower resolution to look at bitmap graphics. My Acer AL2216W sure doesn't, as it pretty much always distorts things horizontally, like you mentioned, when I use a lower resolution, the lower the screen resolution used the worse it gets. My Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti isn't very good at it either if I use its downscaling function instead of the monitors function. Either of them do quite well in scaling vector graphics, like the desktop for example, but not so well with bitmap graphics.

But, this is neither here nor there, it's your mod so if you don't like them, then you don't put them up for users to download. That's obviously your prerogative and I have no problem with that, so I won't bother you with it any more.

I deleted that first set right after I saw you'd downloaded them, and before I put up the second file set without your name ('1680x1050 Menu Screens.zip'. I delete files at Mediafire as soon as they get downloaded. Did you refresh your your browsers Page View??? The other files there are waiting for IDM Corp to download them.

No. Again, since you didn't change the aspect ratio, and this time you've just distorted the images horizontally, there is still no difference at all between yours and mine when the game scales them to your screen size. Take before and after screenshots and see for yourself. You might as well just be using the ones I provide here.

Also, please remove my name from your first set of download links.

OK, take a look at these and see if they're what you need.

They look pretty good on my older Acer AL2216W monitor.

Ah hah... Okay... I didn't even think of that. I'll redo them at the older ratio of 1.6:1 and upload them again for you to take a look at.

My eyes must be getting creaky, cranky, not to mention old these days. Other than the obvious small difference in picture height, I can't actually tell any difference between the two ratios on my older monitor. Probably why I never made a living as an art critic! ;-)
