About this mod

This mod adds a full troop tree inspired by the Spartan army as well as troop branches for supporting light units from other areas of ancient Greece. All units are recruit-able (50%) spawn rate in all towns and settlements.

ATC is a requirement if you want to recruit these from towns. Otherwise you'll need to use the developer console.

OPTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

 - Adonnay's Troop Changer v1.4.10 - This will allow you to recruit these units from Empire cultured towns and settlements.

 - Phalanx inspired shieldwall - Make sure you check out the 'Phalanx - Improved Spears and Shield Wall' file on this mod page for the improved spear and shield wall files.

 - CA - Eagle Rising Patch - If you'd like to play this mod alongside CA - Eagle Rising, then please download the 'CA Eagle Rising Patch' file. This file will replace the ATC.modconfig file from the main file for this mod so please back this up first, if you ever want to play this mod on it's own then you'll need to replace this file. Don't worry if you do overwrite it - you can always re download the main file here to replace it once again.

NOTE: If you do not use ATC then these units will still be in your game but you'll only be able to asset them via the developer console. Please see below for developer console unit ids.

To any German speakers - here is a great lets play for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPLIBdSXNJs&t=6s

Be sure to check out lus Ti 's youtube channel!

NOTE: This is compatible with the Realistic Battle Mod 'AI Module' however, I do not recommend using this alongside the 'Combat Module', the Shield Wall is much less effective and this causes issues with the Phalanx (Hoplite shield wall) with these units.

NOT Recommended to use with Realistic Battle Mod 'Combat Module'.

Change log
NEW File (Phalanx - Improved Spears and Shield Wall for v1.5.8 and v1.5.9)

 - This file will improve the performance of spears in a shield wall formation.
 - Simply place the hoplites in a shield wall and tell them to hold onto their spears.
 - Hoplites are more than twice as effective in this formation with these files vs in loose formation.
 - As enemies approach the shield wall, spear lunges will start being thrown successfully without being blocked allied troops shields.
 - Hoplites in the second and third rank will be making lunges over the front line.
 - Hoplites in this formation will sustain less casualties, but try to make sure they don't get flanked.

I've tested this extensively, but if you have any feedback or suggestions then feel free to drop them in the comments or message me.

Update 5.3.0

 - Added an optional file patch for compatibility for the CA Eagle Rising mod. Use that if you want to play both mods.
 - Split the Spartan Greek troop trees to that the hoplite recruit is now a basic troop which should appear more frequently in settlements.
 - You can now recruit greek and hoplite units from any settlement, regardless of culture. This means that you'll have convenient access to these units no matter the culture you decide play with.

Update 5.2.0

 - Added Pilos helmet (from Hellenic Panoply) to Spartan Youth (100% spawn rate) and Trained Hoplite Soldier (50% spawn rate)
 - Tweaked damage of Kopis and Xiphos swords for balancing

Update 5.1.1

 - Fixed crash on the crafting screen

Update 5.1.0

- Reduced damage stats slightly (around 10%) of the Hellenic Xiphos sword for balancing

Update 5.0.0.

As always it's such a great community on the nexus, I've been able to leverage some great assets from other mods to bring these troops to life and make them feel a bit more authentic. These Spartans are not longer naked and now come with correctly styled corinthian helmets, hoplon shields and scaled linen cuirasses! The supporting light units are also equip with pelta shields.

 - Added Spartan Kopis Sword, inspired by the movie '300'. Kudos to Dawa221 for the creative talent. Check out his mod page --> Spartan Sword
 - Added Greek body armour (linen cuirass and bronze plate), helmets, shields (hoplon) and Xiphos sword. Many thanks to ACardboardBox (nocturnalfox) for allowing me to make use of his absolutely amazing assets. If you left an endorsement here then please remember to head over to his mod page and do the same --> Hellenic Panoply

- Updated screenshots to represent latest assets.

Please bear in mind that when you first enter a battle, it may take longer than usual to load. Once you're loaded into the first battle, any subsequent battles should load at normal speeds. I think this is because of how some of the assets are packages and the CPU needs to unpack them.

Update 4.0.0.

 - Added compatability for ATC (Adonnay's Troop Changer) - You will need to install ATC in order to recruit these units from imperial towns and settlements, if you do not use ATC then you'll need to use the developer console. ATC is easy and fast to install and it provides some useful configuration options such as choosing the frequency that recruits spawn and whether they are exclusive to the player character or clan : ATC - Adonnay's Troop Changer
 - Fixed crash when selecting 'Custom Battle'

Update 3.0.0 Changes:

 - Brought mod up to compatibility with Bannerlord v1.5.8
 - All greek and hoplite units now at least wear a tunic

Known Issue (FIXED in 4.0.0):

Attempting to run a custom battle seems to cause a crash to desktop, but the following seems to be working fine:

 - Starting a new campaign
 - Loading a save
 - Entering towns and villages on foot

I will continue to investigate why the custom battles are having trouble. I play tested this version of the mod through the campaign for a couple of hours without any crashes. Please let me know if you experience any!

Update 2.0.0 Changes:

Spartans:

 - All Spartans can now throw their spears, make sure you tell them to hold fire at the start of battle. Note that they each only have one and once they are thrown they'll resort to their weaker short swords, so be sure to throw them at the right time!
 - Increased body armour for all Hoplite Units. The body armour rating is attached to their shield, which are all unique items to this mod and do not interfere with their vanilla counterparts.
 - Created separate weapon and shield objects for all Hoplites allowing more flexibility and variation in stats across all units.
 - Added new weapon 'Hoplite Throwing Spear' for lower level Hoplites.
 - Added new weapon 'Fine Hoplite Throwing Spear' for higher level Hoplites.
 - Changed the armour of the Armoured Hoplite Veteran to Lamellar Over Leather to match the style of the other Hoplite clothes/armour
 - Increased the damage of the Hoplite spears, this makes the Shieldwall much more Phalanx like. (The Xiphos damage remains the same)
 - Added Imperial shoulder pads to Hoplite Trained Soldier and Spartan Youth

Greeks:

 - Changed the Skiritai Recruit outfit to Empire Short Tunic

NOTE: Whether you are using the clothed or non-clothed version, the armour rating will be the same.

Thanks to renyaogin and his mod "Make Pila Throwable again" as I used it to research on how to modify and create new craft-able item templates.

SPARTAN AND GREEK TROOP TREE

This mod adds a full troop tree inspired by the Spartan army as well as troop branches for supporting light units from other areas of ancient Greece. All units are recruit-able and replaces the imperial recruits.

Testing and balancing has been done to try to prevent the Spartan units from being too overpowered but still deadly when used as intended, don't get me wrong, if you want to spawn in 300 of the finest Royal Spartans for yourself and march straight over to the Aserai, then you can totally do that! :D I welcome and value the input and/or suggestions from the community on any additional features or improvements with balancing.

I'm hoping to find an alternate method to replacing the vanilla in game units as I understand that some people would still like them to be available.

What's in it?

 - Brand new starting unit, the Skiritai Recruit.
 - A full troop tree branch for Hoplites, starting from a Hoplite Recruit, moving all the way through 5 other ranks before reaching the Royal Spartan.
 - Extra troop tree branches for Greek lighter units, these are mainly light infantry (Peltasts) and some regular archers, as well as some light and medium cavalry. These units are slightly weaker than their Bannerlord counterparts in other factions so as to balance out the fact that the Hoplites are slightly superior.
 - Full Greek armour, including but not limited to linothorax, corinthian and pilos helmets, bronze greaves and chest plates.
 - All of these units can be recruited from any imperial town or settlement, at a 50% spawn rate chance alongside the vanilla recruit.
 - Hellenic Xiphos short sword, the secondary weapon of the Hoplite and Greek infantry.
 - Kopis short sword, modelled on the version from the movie '300'
 - New hoplons (shields) with Greek inspired decorations including the lambda.

Installation

>>>>>IF YOU USE AN EXISTING SAVE TO USE THIS MOD THEN PLEASE DO A BACKUP OF YOUR SAVE FILE FIRST!<<<<<

 - Download the main zip file, unpack it and place it in your Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord Modules directory (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Mount & Blade II Bannerlord\Modules\)

 - Run the Bannerlord launcher

 - Select Mods

 - Ensure that the Spartan and Greek units mod is ticked.

 - Hit Play

 - In Game, you can find the 'Skiritai Recruit' in Imperial towns and settlements alongside the vanilla 'Imperial_Recruit' at a default spawn rate of 50% each

You'll be able to recruit the new unit 'Skiritai Recruit' from any imperial town or village, these recruits will spawn 50% of the time instead of the vanilla imperial recruit. If you wish to change this, you can do so in 'Config\SpartanUnits_ATC.modconfig. If you do not use ATC then you'll need to use the developer console to acquire these unitshttps://www.nexusmods.com/mountandblade2bannerlord/mods/4

If you'd like to spawn these units in game using the Developer Console, use the following command:

campaign.give_troops <troop id> <quantity>

Example:

campaign.give_troops spartan_hoplite 20

Here are the troop ids:

Spartans:

 - Hoplite Recruit............................................hoplite_recruit
 - Hoplite Soldier.............................................hoplite_soldier

Spartan Banner

If you'd like to use the banner in the main photo then here is the code (without the quotes): "11.150.148.1836.1836.766.788.1.0.-30.528.41.40.577.577.764.725.1.1.180.510.148.148.669.849.775.371.1.1.180.510.148.148.669.849.1285.691.1.1.180"

Simply copy this code (Ctrl-C) from here, and when you are in the banner changer paste it into the game window (Ctrl-V) and it will be applied to your clan banner.

If you are interested in making your own banner then you can do so here: https://bannerlord.party/banner/

How to Play

You can use any existing save to play this mod or create a totally new game.

>>>>>IF YOU USE AN EXISTING SAVE TO USE THIS MOD THEN PLEASE DO A BACKUP OF YOUR SAVE FILE FIRST!<<<<<

NOTE: If you do decide to load an existing game then you may need to wait some time for these units to start being drafted into the rosters of the noblemen in towns and settlements before you'll see them (this will only take 1 to 2 days of in game time).

As mentioned above, you'll find these units in any Imperial town or settlement, I was considering of also adding a version which replaces the Vlandian recruits instead, as the topology of where the Vlandian's begin, with the Aserai to the east, reminds me a lot of real world Greece.

Please let me know if you find any bugs :)

How to get the most out of the Spartan and Greek units in Bannerlord
Phalanx: Order Hoplites to hold fire and put them in a shield wall (they will switch to their spears)

Charge but keep spear: Order Hoplites to hold fire and then charge them (they will switch to the Kopis sword short and use the spear only for cavalry)

For smaller engagements it may be feasible to charge your hoplites and allow them to throw their spear, the initial kill streak of the spear volley may batter the moral of a smaller force and end the engagement quickly.

After much testing, I've tried to produce the most effective way of using these units, and suit their skills and equipment to best suit that use.

NOTE: In order to enjoy this mod you do not need to follow these steps, you can simple use these like normal units, each infantryman is equip with a Kopis (Spartan short sword), a version of the Kopis modelled off of the sword from the movie '300'. If you command your Hoplites to charge, they will switch to using their short short when it's less favourable to use the spear.

If you are more interested in playing more technically with the Hoplites, then read on to the points below.

This is one tactic that I've found to work from experimentation, there may be other viable tactics. In order to use the Hoplites in this manner you'll need to:

1.) Order your Hoplites to hold fire so they hold onto their spears

2.) Order the Hoplites into Shieldwall formation.

3.) Match the enemy to not too many units get around the flanks.

4.) Have a plan to cover the flanks/rear of the formation or position your troops at a choke point. Luckily the AI in Bannerlord doesn't usually tend to try any funny business and so they'll be happy enough to meet your Hoplites head on in many cases, however, a simple solution to this is to position some peltasts on the flank or rare, so that any cavalry venturing behind will end up running into some javelins. You may decide to develop something more creative and effective than I have.

Goal

Disclaimer: I'm by no means and expert on these subjects, I'm only an enthusiast and so I welcome any suggestions, corrections or criticism, furthermore, I'm open to suggestions to changes and/or additions to the mod.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With this mod I was hoping to create a Hoplite unit that is incredibly effective in a frontal infantry engagement employing it's famous formation, the Phalanx. At the same time this unit needs to be vulnerable on the flanks and rear - creating a need for the supporting light units or choke point positioning to cover these weak points.

Unfortunately, Bannerlord doesn't contain such a formation just yet, however, it does give us the Shieldwall which although isn't ideal, it's the closest we have at this time. After much testing and tweaking, I've gotten to a point where a Shieldwall formation yields few deaths during a frontal infantry engagement if used correctly, in order to get the most out of this you should use the 'Phalanx - Improved Spears and Shield Wall' files.

Thanks!
