Dark0ne\'s Video Blog - State of the Union

  • Comment

A couple of months back I uploaded my first video blog for the Nexus sites, partly to save my hands from writing out the typically 2,000 - 4,000 work essay blogs I used to write, and also so you could see what I look like and see my mannerisms when I expressed my opinions. I said I would do some more if they were well received and I had the time, and today I've finally gotten around to doing another.

Today's video blog takes on the roll of a "State of the Union" type address. I cover the recent release of Steam Workshop and how it has affected the community and the Nexus sites, what we've been up to recently and what we'll be working on in the not too distant future.

While I had set out to make this video shorter than the last one I still managed to talk for 30 minutes without even realising it (my teachers always used to say I suffered from verbal diarrhea) so if you're only interested in a specific subject I'm talking about then take a look at the times in the contents list below:

1. Prologue, introduction to the video (0:00)
2. A talk on Steam Workshop and it's effect on the Nexus/the community (1:05)
3. What we've been up to at the Nexus in the past few months (9:47)
4. The future and what we're going to be working on (12:25)
4.1 Point of contention #1 - only showing content to users that they actually care to see (14:57)
4.2 Point of contention #2 - increasing the visibility of mods past the first week (16:40)
4.3 Point of contention #3 - overhaul of the moderation system (23:00)
4.4 File uploading system overhaul (27:14)
4.5 The Nexus Mod Manager (28:40)
5. Finishing up (29:50)

If you're the sort of person who likes listening to podcasts, or would simply prefer an MP3 to listen to on a portable device or on your PC rather than listening to the YouTube video, then I have uploaded the audio from the video blog here for you to download.

Great to hear from you as always Robin. You've got a great voice and conversational style. And ok, I'll try to stop bashing Steam Workshop...but they make it such an easy target. Anyway, awesome to hear NMM is getting more programming attention. I also agree that it could be VERY awesome with some TLC. Thanks for everything you do. We owe you so much.

It seems to me rather than banning people who write things that violate the rules (and may have paid for membership), the final step should be simply taking away their ability to write on the Nexus. That way they could still download MODs and enjoy the Nexus without causing more trouble. Yes, they got themselves in trouble but they may still have paid for lifetime memberships. My compromise would let them keep access and yet not keep breaking the rules.

Hey Dark great to hear of the upcoming changes especially the moderation changes I am a long term member and occasional mod author and to be painfully honest in the last few years I have stopped posting on the forums and on mods because of the ever present fear of the ban hammer (I'm no troll but I have seen small disagreements result in the boot and did not want to get myself in the gray area of a black and white system ) it's good to now know (I'm sure it was explained before and I missed it) why it has been this way, thanks for the explanation and the future fixes, addons to make it and the Nexus work better

P.S. Thanks for all the hard work over these years since you took up the mantle and know it is appreciated even though it may not be said often enuff!

    Kind Regards,
    Whitey22

Thanks for the update, great work I've been using the nexus since oblivion it just keeps getting better.

I was hoping that you would address the slowness of the site do to traffic but the NMM is also important, I see there was a new release today. Try to find some extra resources to shift to new/upgraded server space for the site, I've been seeing a big increase in the "sorry for the delay, 500 pages loaded/sec" page even at 1am PST. I'm guessing this is the beginning of the peak hours in Europe? I don't really like how the workshop handles mods so the nexus is my home and I just want to see it run smoothly for everyone. Keep up the great work!

First, thank you Dark0ne for providing this platform and all the fun and features to us for free!

Since your speech was also about new features I hope it is ok to post my personal wish list.
    - I would like to see a preview picture in the latest file section. A pic really helps to trigger my interest (see appstore)
    - I would be really interested in more news - not only concerning this site, but also new tools coming out, cool Skyrim stuff on the internet (and a "cool link drop box" for you), even news directly from the Bethesda page (since it is not interesting enough to browse it regularly) and other Skyrim related news and dates.
    - I love to get to know more about the modders like you did in the past. Maybe a little less Q&A, but I would be really interested if they were willing to write more about their game design approach and vision for the game or what tools and ressources they use. I would like to see a monthly hall of fame - giving a modder the chance to speak out to the community.

Really looking forward to the cool features you announced!
